Happy Boxing Day! Confused? Well, yesterday morning, much to their surprise, geeks around the world discovered that Christmas had come early when a low quality version of the trailer for The Avengers: Age of Ultron was leaked online. Instead of huffing and puffing and trying to blow this internet house down, Marvel instead did the admirable thing: Blame HYDRA. That was followed by them releasing an official, high definition version so that we could – pardon the pun – marvel in its awesomeness properly.

And one aspect of the trailer that was definitely *cough* marvelous was our first look (well, listen) at James Spader’s titular genocidal robot Ultron. This is the first time that most of the public has seen the screen veteran’s take on one of the Avengers’ greatest villains and it certainly didn’t disappoint as he turned a piece of cute dialogue from Disney’s Pinocchio into something truly terrifying. And as Spader explained to Total Film, it was apparently those under-the-surface child-like manerisims that drew him to the character.

“There’s a humerous aspect to him, which is something that drew me in from the very first conversation I had with Joss [Whedon]. In many ways he’s a child, this character, because he’s a brand new being who’s just come to be. And yet, through artificial intelligence, he has an incredible capacity for knowledge. So he’s a very powerful, smart child.”

And much like a child who doesn’t get his way, Ultron looks like he’s about to throw his toys out of the cot. The toys of course being Tony Stark and the rest of the heroes. Having Spader facing off against such onscreen personalities as Robert Downey Jr is especially enticing for anybody that’s been watching The Blacklist, wherein Spader just chews scenery as Raymond “Red” Reddington, an federal agent turned master criminal who sort of helps out the good guys. According to Spader, it’s that last bit that separates Red from Ultron though.

“Ultron takes abrupt turns in scenes. Red isn’t pyschopathic but Ultron is. Yes, he is psychopathic. He’s really batsh*t crazy!”

As insanely successful as Marvel has been, ff there’s one criticism that can be leveled at the studio it’s their lack of noteworthy villains. Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is undoubtedly the gold standard when it comes to baddies in their cinematic universe. But from what I’m seeing, the god of mischief might just be getting some company on that vaunted pedestal soon.

May 1, 2015 suddenly feels like a lifetime away!
