It wasn’t the weekend for the biggest of releases when it cames to new movies, but the newcomers didn’t disappoint thanks to some solid ticket sales. Taking first place, Ouija scared up $20 million at the box office, making this spooky film the second biggest genre debut of the year ahead of January’s Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones($18.3 million),October’s ($18 million) and Carrie($16.1 million). You can thank multiple factors for that hit.
You’ve got a young cast (Cheap to hire), good timing and a PG-13 rating which meant that the film could appeal to a younger crowd that wanted some pre-Halloween fun. Good thinking, on that film. And it also happens to be rather decent as well.
In the action category, John Wick took second place with $14.1 million with an opening at 2589 theaters. Though that figure isn’t in the same ballpark as the recent The Equalizer, John Wick was made with a much more modest budget, besting other flicks in the old badass man genre such as A Walk Among The Tombstones ($12.8 Million), The November Man ($7.9 Million) and 3 Days To Kill ($12.2 Million). The film has yet to hit foreign markets, but expect John Wick to pick up once it does. Here’s how everyone else did on the weekend:

Top ten departures this week include Annabelle, The Equalizer and The Maze Runner. Annabelle scared up $206 million worldwide off of a $6.5 million budget, while The Equalizer made off with a precise $171.4 million off of a $55 million budget. The Maze Runner managed to nab some of that Young Adult pie, making a rather profitable $272 million around the world.
