Spoiler alert for those of you who haven’t read the books: In the The Hunger Games: Mockingjay shit blows up! And I mean that in both the literal and figurative sense. As you can see in this final trailer for Part 1 of the franchise’s closing chapter, there’s a whole heap of pyrotechnics on display but the scale of the action and drama also gets a significant upgrade over what came before. No longer confined to a man-made arena, the beginning of the end of Katniss Everdeen’s story sees the “Girl on fire” and her friends engaging in an all-out war across the entire Capitol.

And as it tends to be, this war ain’t pretty. I’ve been waiting for this final part of the story to see how director Francis Lawrence handles the massive uptick in very, very violent and gruesome deaths that take place. There were already a few places in the previous two films where you could feel the movies’ action beats straining against their PG-13 leash, so this could be quite the challenge.

But gory demises is not the only concern. With this escalation in scope, it will be interesting to see if they can strike a balance between the widescreen theatrics and the personal drama surrounding Katniss. Jennifer Lawrence’s crackling portrayal of the reluctant rebel has been the leading light of this franchise, and it would really be a pity to see that light overshadowed by a whole lot of CGI explosions. This trailer seems to indicate that Lawrence – that’s the director, not the actress – has managed to walk that fine line that made Catching Fire the success it was, but this is just a trailer. It is a good trailer though, so go check it out.

The worldwide phenomenon of The Hunger Games continues to set the world on fire with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, which finds Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 also stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Dormer, Jeffrey Wright, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland. It is scheduled for release on November 21, 2014.
