These new images and details for TERMINATOR: GENISYS are jaw-dropping

terminator-genisys-cast

When I read Darryn’s article yesterday on how Terminator: Genisys (Urgh! Still hurts to spell that word like that) is dramatically changing the details of characters we already know and showing off the first images of the cast, it left my mouth agape with just how bad it sounded and looked (Sarah Connor is now raised by a Terminator? What?!). You know who else’s mouths’ are also left wide open? The cast of Terminator: Genisys.

Well, that’s according to this new batch of images courtesy of EW. Now I have to point out that these are just promo shots, and not in-movie, but I still have to wonder at just what look they were going for here? “Okay, we need to see nobody’s eyes – yes, that’s it squint like Clint Eastwood at midday! – and now gimme a whole lotta mouth. More mouth! MORE. MOUTH. Like a python swallowing an obese warthog, people!”

Thank you, Arnold Schwarzenegger for being the sole face of reason here. And speaking of Arnie’s face, it’s going to be used to help pull off one of the film’s most difficult visual challenges, according to EW:

In what could be one of the most impressive technical feats yet, the filmmakers plan to re-create the memorable scene in the original Terminator when the T-800 lands at L.A.’s Griffith Observatory, complete with Schwarzenegger’s 36-year-old face and ripped, naked body. To achieve that, the special-effects team has created a “synthespian,” or synthetic thespian, using a body double plus scans of Schwarzenegger’s face from the first film merged with what his face looks like now. The result: an entirely CG head of the Terminator circa 1984. “It’s the holy grail of visual effects,” [producer David] Ellison says. “You create a walking, breathing human that doesn’t exist.”

James Cameron’s T2: Judgement Day of course set the (very, very high) benchmark when it came to CGI-actors with their iconic T-1000 villain, and Genisys is apparently no different with it’s mysterious bad guy – described as a “man/machine hybrid” – also pushing the technological envelope, according to director Alan “Thor: The Dark World” Taylor:

“Part of the challenge is to dazzle people with something they haven’t seen before. There are elements in our main villain that are straining the capacities of our brilliant visual-effects people. So that’s a good sign.”

It’s not all just flashy bits and bobs on a computer screen though, as there’s a fair share of very physical action going on, as Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke – who plays the young Sarah Connor now – found out:

“The thing I didn’t know about action movies is that when someone is running on screen, they are really running. No one looks brilliant running on camera. That’s an embarrassing day when you look at yourself and think, ‘Oh, yeah, I look like an idiot. I should fix that.’ ”

Er, okay… So how did she think running worked before this? Luckily, Jason Clarke, who play’s Sarah’s grown-up son John (time-travel, people) is a bit more realistic about the physical feats required:

“You have to be physically on top of [these stunts]. If you get it wrong, it’s a two-, three-hour reset. You’re shooting at night. Trying to beat the sun coming up. There are a lot of pressures on these big films. I landed right in the middle of Arnold in one scene, with my boots banging down on the ground. I could have broken the dude.”

Ha ha. Break Arnold Schwarzenegger. You’re a funny guy, Mr. Clarke.

Let’s just hope that when Terminator: Genisys eventually releases on July 31, 2015, there’s no more funny business.

  1. The guy in the top image on the left. Something just seems wrong with his head. Like it’s too big. Is that a machine?
