Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

“I’m in ‘Avengers[: Age of Ultron] and I’m doing a scene with Chris Hemsworth [who plays Thor] and Tom Hiddleston [Loki], and they’re like, [whispers] – ‘Aren’t you [meant to be] in Ibiza?’ ”

Hmmm, why do I get the feeling that this may be a post-credit stinger for Thor: Ragnarok?

  • Oh, Kevin Spacey. Keep being awesome.

  • And while we’re on the subject of celebrity impressions… Some of you should know that TheMovies is a sister site of Lazygamer.net, meaning that we’re all gamers around here. And on upcoming game that we’re all excited for is Assassin’s Creed: Unity. Know who else is excited for it? Some of our favourite actors. Or at least the people that are impersonating some of our favourite actors.

  • I really wasn’t very impressed with Divergent. Sure, Shailene Woodley is a strong dramatic actress, but the whole story was just too ridiculous (especially the weird chicken dance martial arts they do). One thing that really baffled me though, was what the hell Whiplash star Miles Teller was doing in the movie. He’s a very promising actor who had just come off rave reviews for The Spectacular Now and then he goes and does a movie where he plays a stereotypical bully with not much to do. Turns out, it was all just a part of doing business.

“When I first read Whiplash, I was feeling dead inside [because of Divergent]. I didn’t have an interesting part, and I’d taken the film for business reasons: It was the first movie I’d done that was going to have an international audience. I called my agent and said, ‘This sucks.’ He told me about Whiplash.”

  • Poster of the day: The Book of Life

  • With the trailer for Alex Garland‘s directing debut Ex Machina just lighting up the internet last week, the writer turned director has seemingly already landed his next gig behind the camera. Paramount has tapped Garland – who also penned 28 Days Later, Sunshine, The Beach and Dreddto write and direct Annihilation, an adaptation of the first book in Jeff VanderMeer’s “Southern Reach” trilogy of sci-fi/fantasy novels. The novel deals with “a biologist seeking answers about her husband’s disappearance in an enivironmental disaster areas sealed off by the government for the last 30 years.” That disaster zone is known as Area X and is being completely taken over by nature again, but seems to be triggering all sorts of odd behaviour –  suicides, aggressive cancers, and mental trauma – from the various expeditions that have previously entered it.
  • He’s beaten up giant robots and biker gangs, and now Charlie Hunnam has his sights set on roughing up some real life Thai prisoners so that he can get more famous. Okay, that sounds a bit bad. Let me explain: Hunnam has been picked to star in A Prayer Before Dawn, the true story of “Billy Moore, who ended up incarcerated in the brutal Thai prison Klong Prem, known as the notorious Bangkok Hilton. There, mostly to survive, he began learning the skills of Muay Thai Boxing.”

Director Jean-Stephane Sauvaire is already busy recruiting real life ex-prisoners and Mauy Thai champions to act opposite in the movie, which he describes as “at one and the same time – a true story, a prison drama, a survival movie, a desperate love story and an extraordinary tale of redemption. Above all, it is a poignant and uniquely human story.”

  • Star Wars: Episode VII has officially wrapped production. For a lot of people who worked on the movie, this is the end of their involvement, but writer-director JJ Abrams and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy wasn’t going to send them on their merry way without letting them know just how much their work is appreciated. In an incredible act of just being nice, the cast and crew all received this touching note yesterday.

Oof! Right in the feels!

  • In less than 24 hours I will watching Chris Nolan’s Interstellar. My body is ready. If you’re not in tip-top sci-fi geek shape yet, then maybe this supercut showing off the beauty of space in movies will help to get in the right frame of mind.

  • Pirates of the Caribbean 5 looks all set to get going soon, with a February 2015 production start date eyed by Disney and Javier Bardem pretty much onboard to play the film’s villain Captain Brand opposite Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow. All they need to figure out now is who’s playing Henry….Wait, who the hell is Henry?!

It seems that nobody knows other than it is” the hot role to be had at Disney right now”. The House of Mouse are thus seemingly screentesting a who’s-who of up and coming young actors for the role, with the list apparently including Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service), George Mackay (Pride), Brenton Thwaites (The Giver, Maleficent), Mitchell Hope (Descendants), Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) and Sam Keeley (In the Heart of the Sea).

  • Personally, I find comedian Zach Galifianakis to be a bit hit and miss. Except when we’re talking about “Between Two Ferns”, his Funny or Die talk show segment which is nothing but hit. And holy hell, are there a lot of them – hits that is – in this latest bit in which he completely eviscerates Brad Pitt from how he looks like an ubermensch to being overshadowed by his wife Angelina Jolie. Pitt’s awkwardness is palpable, but it’s all utterly hilarious.
