Usually when you see the words “hardcore” and “POV” in close proximity to each other on the internet, it means some very, very naughty things. But Russian director Ilya Naishuller’s Hardcore is the very opposite of naughty – as in good, real good. Claiming to be the world’s first full POV movie (though I can think of one or two other’s – Gaspar Noe’s Enter the Void immediately comes to mind), it’s a thrilling sci-fi action film shot from entirely from a first-person perspective.

Although Naishuller has finished principal photography on the film – using a custom, head-mounted Go-Pro rig – he still needs to finish the film’s post-production effects. He may have received the producing backing of Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Night Watch, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) after the big time director saw Naishuller’s “Bad Motherf@#$er” –  a POV short film that garnered a massive 4 million views on Youtube (and which we also featured previously) – but Naishuller still needs some additional funding. To this end, he has started a campaign on IndieGoGo which at the time of writing is sitting on $54 000 of its $250 000 goal.

And to entice supporters, Naishuller has released this teaser from the film, which features none other than local boytjie Sharlto Copley, and it’s pretty, well, Hardcore. Check it out below.

HARDCORE is a modern, action Sci-Fi story about HENRY, a newly resurrected cyborg who must save his wife/creator ESTELLE (Haley Bennet) from the clutches of a psychotic tyrant with telekinetic powers, AKAN (Danila Kozlovsky), and his army of mercenaries.  Fighting alongside Henry is JIMMY (Sharlto Copley), who is Henry’s only hope to make it through the day. Hardcore takes place over the course of one day, in Moscow, Russia.

If you’re prone to motion sickness, then a full movie like this will probably be turning your green at the gills just at the thought of it, but I think this could be rather cool. It sure as hell will appeal to the gaming crowd, who’ve been hoping for ages that filmmakers could successfully translate the experience of playing their favourite video-game to the screen (Doom put in a valiant effort, but still fell short). Now those people can finally put their money wear their mouths are.

And even if the idea of a FPS movie does leave you a little queasy, I would still consider donating just for some of the incredible gifts they’re giving away to backers, like a USB drive that looks like a real handgun, preloaded with the movie! Really!

Neat trinkets aside though, I think this could be a really cool experience, and I hope Naishuller meets his target so that we can see this in the cinemas one day.
