When the road looks rough ahead, and you’re miles and miles from your nice warm stack of cash bed, you just remember what your ol’ pal said because you got a friend in me.

During an investor call at Disney, CEO Bob Iger announced that Toy Story 4 was on the way for a 2017 release, with Toy Story 1 and 2 director John Lasseter returning to helm the project according to Collider. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will also return as thei signature characters of Woody and Buzz Lightyear in an attempt to please shareholders I reckon.

Now make no mistake, I dig Toy Story. But I think Toy Story 3 gave the franchise the ending that it deserved. I’m not concerned whatsoever about quality or story thanks to the inclusion of writers such as Lasster, Lee Unkrich, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter. But I still feel that it is an unnecessary sequel. Much like some toys that get variant re-releases.

Lasseter said in a statement today:

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. ‘Toy Story 3’ ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

Well, I suppose Pixar needs to make some money for Disney, before being allowed to crack open some more original ideas. And I can’t imagine a film like this not making any cash in the long run. On the plus side, at least Disney isn’t making Pixar work on Cars 3…oh wait, crap they are. Dammit Disney.

  1. I’d prefer if they just milked Cars and left my precious Toy Story as it is.
