I’ve been very intrigued by Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, but that’s just because I’m always intrigued by anything Vaughn does. Especially when what he’s doing involves a comic book adaptation. Vaughn has already struck comic book gold thrice previously with Stardust, X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass. The latter is an adaptation of acclaimed writer Mark Millar’s comic book, and now Vaughn is once again tackling one of his works in Kingsman. And just like with the ultra-violent, potty-mouthed Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass, audiences are in for quite a shocking ride with Kingsman, if the early reactions to the film can be believed.
The first trailers for the film looked really, really cool, but I didn’t expect it to be anything more intense than that – this is after all a movie starring Colin Firth, about the most British man to ever live. But it would appear that I was quite mistaken, as the movie apparently has more in common with Gareth Evans’ The Raid than Bridget Jones’ Diary. Yes, I said The Raid and Colin Firth in the same breath, and yes, I know how crazy that sounds, but just listen to what was being said on Twitter by folks who got to see an early screening of the film over the weekend (handily collected by JoBlo).
Well, Kingsman: The Secret Service is utterly demented. Mostly in a good way.

If you’ve ever wanted to see Colin Firth go Raid-style loco on a room full of people, scored to Freebird, this is the movie for you. — Nick de Semlyen (@NickdeSemlyen) November 13, 2014
So much verve & invention in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Like Bond’s mischievous, foul-mouthed, psychotic cousin

One scene in Kingsman: The Secret Service is so energised, violent & batshit crazy, I didn’t know whether to cower or leap up & cheer — Jamie Graham (@jamie_graham9) November 13, 2014
#Kingsman: by no means perfect, but the last third is just ridiculously entertaining. One scene is ridiculously, jaw-droppingly violent.

Most important of all: #Kingsman has many appearances from a ridiculously cute pug.

I know I put ‘ridiculous’ in that tweet twice, but it really is. — Ben Travis (@BenSTravis) November 13, 2014
If you enjoyed Kick Ass, you’ll love Kingsman: Secret Service. An exhilarating, funny film with a distinctly British heart. @digitalspyfilm

Colin Firth and Taron Egerton are sublime. Hopefully Kingsman: Secret Service is just the beginning. It’s that kind of movie.@digitalspyfilm — Ben Rawson-Jones (@rawsonjones) November 13, 2014
Wow I had no idea KINGSMAN was going to be a hyper-violent, hard-R type movie.

Kingsman: The Secret Service is a blast. Audacious, hyper-violent, stylish, funny and the work of an utter madman. In the best possible way. — Chris Hewitt (@ChrisHewitt) November 13, 2014
Things happen in Kingsman that I’ve never seen before in a mainstream movie. It’ll divide some people, but great to see risks this big. — Chris Hewitt (@ChrisHewitt) November 13, 2014
And yes, there’s a Colin Firth action sequence that comes on like the whole of The Raid meets the last 20 minutes of Braindead.
— Chris Hewitt (@ChrisHewitt) November 13, 2014
Well, wow. And maybe even a hot damn. Here’s the last trailer again, just to remind you of what all the fuss is about.
Kingsman: The Secret Service also stars Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Mark Strong and Mark Hamill. It is scheduled for international release on February 13, 2015.

I actually dismissed this at first. Now, not a chance.
