Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • We’ve told you guys before how there’s lots of bad blood between Marvel and Fox, due to Fox’s treatment of the Marvel characters they own the rights to. There’s been lots of speculation that Marvel’s recent cancellation of their Fantastic Four comic, is a direct reaction to Fox’s upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, which they don’t want to give publicity to in any way, but Marvel has always denied this. What they can’t deny though, is this blatant dig at the film that occurs in the pages of the latest issues of “The Punisher”. It features actors who clearly resemble Fantastic Four stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell, talking about a director named “Trang” and his friend Mike – as in director Josh Trank and co-star Michael B. Jordan – before being blown up by the Punisher. Unsubtle much, Marvel?
  • And sticking with the Marvel comics world… One of the company’s most popular (and my favourite) cosmic based heroes, Nova aka Richard Rider, was of course nowhere to be found in Guardians of the Galaxy, despite being heavily involved in their origins in the comics. Lots of people have been hoping that he would be popping up in the sequel though, and have asked writer-director James Gunn about it (probably with much caps-lock and exclamation marks). Unfortunately though, Gunn has no plans to include the character. For now.

“I don’t want Nova right now because I think Quill being the only earthling is important. That serves the entire moviegoing audience and not just the handful of Nova fans. Sorry if that upsets you. I have nothing against Nova in future movies, but it doesn’t serve the movie right this moment.”

  • Thor star Natalie Portman is used to hanging out with people who are worshiped as gods, so I guess it should come as no surprise that she’s joining the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic. After being mysteriously dropped by Sony Pictures, the Aaron Sorkin penned, Danny Boyle directed biopic has been given new life over at Universal and are now busy filling out their cast. Sorkin has mentioned in the past that the late Apple founder’s daughter is the heroine of this movie, and it appears that that’s who Portman could be playing, although there’s been no official confirmation yet.
  • Based on this new behind-the-scenes featurette for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, New York is not so much the The City That Never Sleeps, as it’s apparently The City That Doesn’t Give A Crap That You Dressed Up Like 6-ft Human Turtle In Grey Pyjamas With A Camera Pointed At Your Face.

  • Director Ridley Scott has taken a bit of flak for the fact this biblical epic, Exodus: Gods and King, a story set entirely in North Africa and the Middle East, stars virtually nothing but a bunch of white dudes in Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton. But according to Scott the whitewashing of the cast has nothing to with any sort of racial agenda, as some have alluded, but is simply the price of doing business.

I can’t mount a film of this budget, where I have to rely on tax rebates in Spain, and say that my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such. I’m just not going to get it financed. So the question doesn’t even come up.

For the record, I don’t fully agree with Scott’s statement. I understand that you need recognizable leads to market the movie, but that doesn’t explain why even the small trivial roles are being played by white European/American actors.

  • If you cannot wait that long for the trailer then allow me to help you out. Now I might get in trouble for doing this, but the trailer has just popped online, so you need to click play on the video below ASAP!

Oh, did I forget to mention that that’s a fan made version, pulling footage from various clips/video games/fan-films, and splicing them together in an admittedly impressive fashion? Oops.

  • The original Cowardly Lion costume worn by Bert Lahr in the classic 1939 version of Wizard of Oz, has sold at an auction for $3 million. Reports that Darryn bought it as that’s the only time he will get in a big p***y is unconfirmed.
  • So when you checked out that first trailer for Jurassic World, did you notice that the gate to the actual park was rendered completely in CG? Lots of people did and soon Gategate (as I like to call it) was in full swing online. Word reached director Colin Trevorrow, who responded to plaintiffs on Twitter, explaining that what we saw was still a work in progress.

  • For those of you who don’t know what it is, Sweding is the act of pulling off cheap, homemade copies of movies or their trailers (This is not to be confused with Asylum’s mockbusters who only have better production values). And the latest trailer to get Sweded is The Avengers: Age of Ultron and it’s incredible!
