I don’t want to sound like a stereotypical male, but has anybody noticed how Jennifer Aniston appears to just get hotter the older she gets? She reached her most recent peak of hotness in as a sexpot dentist in Horrible Bosses, which had many an admirer thinking some naughty thoughts about that very versatile dentist’s chair.

And now that I have placed that sexed up image of Aniston in your head, allow me to wipe it all away with Cake. No, I’m not talking about confectionary induced amnesia, but rather the new indie-drama that shows Aniston in about as unflattering a light as she’s ever been in. The film, about a chronic-pain sufferer dealing with the suicide of a member of her support group, called for the usually charming, prim and proper Aniston to pull a Charlize Theron – eschewing any make-up, frumping herself up (down?) to almost unrecognizable levels and even throwing in some fake scars – to depict the anger and emotional instability of her character.

And it seems that the drastic departure from her glamorous norm has worked, as she’s garnered incredible buzz for her performance, with some even throwing out the vaunted “O” word (that’s “Oscar”, you pervs!). Whether she gets the nod or not, based on this trailer she certainly goes to some very dark places, and it’s refreshing to see her tackling a meatier role instead of the lighthearted fluff she’s usually known for.

Claire Simmons (Aniston) is in pain. Her physical pain is evident in the scars that line her body and the way she carries herself, wincing with each tentative step. She’s no good at hiding her emotional pain either. Blunt to the point of searing insult, Claire’s anger seethes out of her with nearly every interaction. She has driven away her husband, her friends – even her chronic-pain support group has kicked her out.

The only one left in Claire’s otherwise solitary existence is her housekeeper-cum-caretaker, Silvana (Academy Award nominee Adriana Barraza), who barely tolerates her boss’ need for liquor and prescription pills. But the suicide of Nina (Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick), one of Claire’s fellow chronic-pain group members, prompts another fixation. In pursuing questions about the death of a woman she barely knew, Claire explores the boundaries between life and death, abandonment and heartbreak, danger and salvation. As she inserts herself into the lives of Nina’s husband (Sam Worthington) and the son Nina left behind, Claire just might find salvation.

Cake also stars Anna Kendrick, Adriana Barraza, Sam Worthington, Felicity Huffman, Camille Mana, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Chris Messina, William H. Macy. Britt Robertson, Lucy Walters and Manuel Garcia Rulfof. It is scheduled to open internationally on January 23, 2015. There’s no local release date yet.
