AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON doing reshoots for more action; may add another character

While the word “reshoot” is sometimes a warning klaxon that something on a movie needs to be fixed (or made worse – here’s looking at you, 47 Ronin), additional shooting has become par for the course when it comes to Marvel. The comic book film studio regularly has their flicks go back in front of the camera, usually to either add in their now obligatory mid- and post-credits teasers as well just punching up the film. And it looks like the latter is on the cards for Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron will be shooting additional action scenes at London’s Pinewood Studios in January.

According to the Daily Mail (via Collider), Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Hiddleston have been asked to keep open their calendars next year, in case they’re needed. Note, I said “in case”, as they’re just going to be on standby depending on what Whedon still needs to shoot. What’s interesting though is that Chris Evans’ name has been left off that list entirely. Whatever’s being shot, seemingly involves the entire team except Captain America. Put on your tin foil hat and make of that what you will.

Devin at BadassDigest has done just that, and come up with a plausible theory as to what these reshoots could entail. Now I have to mention that while most of what Devin states is pure conjecture, there may be some truth in it (for reasons that I will explain shortly), which could put this theory squarely in the SPOILER territory. Like I said though, nothing is officially confirmed, but just keep that warning in mind.

Now earlier in the year, Devin claimed that he had got his hands on a couple early drafts of the Avengers: Age of Ultron script. He was a good guy about it though, and kept what he saw to a spoiler-light minimum. Some of what he reported though, like the fact that the Avengers would be a two-parter and that the Civil War storyline would be adapted, have all turned out to be true. One thing that he mentioned though was that at the end of one of the earlier draftsa new team of Avengers would be introduced, including Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. That was subsequently removed in later drafts, with the feeling being that the new team may now show up in either Captain America: Civil War or Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1. But what about Captain Marvel?

Well here’s where Devin gets speculative, suggesting that she may just get introduced in the Age of Ultron after all, which means that we would probably be getting a casting announcement about the character soon. Fans responded very positively when Marvel announced that Captain Marvel and Black Panther were finally getting their own movies – finally bringing some much needed diversity to Marvel’s universe – and rapidly threw their support behind Chadwick Boseman as Prince T’Challa. They can keep that momentum going if they were to unveil their Carol Danvers in the next two months.

Like I said though, this is all speculation and could be totally off the mark. Hell, Marvel could even be planning exactly this, but then keep the Captain Marvel casting secret so that it can be a surprise to audiences in 2015.

One thing that isn’t too surprising though is that the Daily Mail is also reporting that Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and Part 2 will be shooting back-to-back. Looking at the movies’ close release dates (May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019, respectively), it was pretty much expected that this would be the case as a movie of this scale simply cannot be done in a year. Just who will be doing the directing on both those movies though, is still up in the air (I’m holding thumbs that the Russos get the job).

Marvel currently have a lot of balls up in the air, and still need to do a few key castings – like Doctor Strange – but Kevin Feige and co have shown us that they’re nothing if not meticulous planners, and have definitely delivered on those plans thus far. So for now, I’m content to sit back and let them do their thing.

  1. With Leto over at DC, doubt he is going to be the good Doctor.

Leto was only ever rumoured. The role was apparently offered to Joaquim Phoenix who initially looked to take it, but then pulled out of negotiations.

That is correct. That is also the full extent of all the official images we’ve seen for the character thus far. All we know is that Paul Bettany, who voices Iron Man’s J.A.R.V.I.S. computer system, is playing the character.

Some concept art for a Sideshow Collectible statue has also leaked though, and it gives us a good idea on his design, which is a pretty good amalgamation of the classic and current look.

I read the Civil War comics last night, thanks to Darryn and his article http://www.lazygamer.net/general-news/read-75-years-of-marvel-comics-for-just-75-cents/ , that just got me even more excited about the coming 5 years of Marvel movies.

The Space Events have been the best ones that Marvel, have put out the past few years. Much better than Civil War, Secret War and the rest.

Won’t hear any argument from me about that. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning have done amazing work.
