I’ve been keen on a Suicide Squad movie ever since Warner Bros announced that David Ayers would be directing that film. It’s a property which has the potential to be the DC answer to Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. A darker, but different, take on the usual goody two shoes capes and masks action that the Justice League represent. Since then, a number of names have been attached to the film. And these are the names that are actually going to main event the project.

And those names are packing plenty of star power. So say hello to Will SMith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevigne as Enchantress and Jared Leto as the Joker. Besides the rather bland  Jai Courtney, that’s a ton of talent in one film, with Warner Bros still scouting to find their Amanda Waller.

According to Variety, Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis are being courted for the role, with the top choice at the moment being Oprah Winfrey. You get an explosive nanobot in your spinal column that forces you to obey my commands, eeeeeeverybody gets an explosive nanobot in their spinal column that forces them to obey my commands!

Warner Bros. President, Greg Silverman released this statement about the future film:

We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.

With such a cast in place, it looks like DC is fielding known names in order to make an impact with their slate of comic book movies. What do you reckon? Is this the cat you want to see in the Dirty Dozen of comic book movies?

  1. Great. Now I have to tell everyone in the office why I’m laughing at Oprah.

My only worry is they’re relying on names to sell the movie, not the movie.

Dude, Oprah is absolutely perfect. Not just a name. She was in Spielberg’s The Colour Purple and she was great in that.

And having her play Waller would be a step away from her usual public persona which would be great to see.

On top of that, having her in the film can help draw in the Oprah crowd, of which there are plenty.

If this film is as good as I hope it could be (basically, a really badass Dirty Dozen with a sci-fi/ fantasy bent) then this is a no lose/ win situation.

Though I would’ve preferred Jason Clarke in the role of Boomerang given that Clark is an Aussie and that he is a master of playing wounded, menacing badass. Jai Courtney is basically white bread with Mayonnaise and GM cheese

Jai Courtney is at least an Aussie. A bland Aussie, yes, but still from down under.

Admittedly though, he wasn’t half bad in Jack Reacher at all.

I meant the “everyone gets an explosive nanobot” line, not her acting ability. 😉

My view on how Amanda Waller should be is completely constructed from her appearance in the Justice League cartoons from 2001. So if she isn’t going to be a large sullen woman, I will not be happy.

i just feels that DC and Warner are making movies because Marvel made a Movie. We have had our rag tag bunch of misfit movie and it was great, we have had our superheros get together to face a massive threat movie and it was great. We are even getting sequels to those movies and because we all (almost all) enjoyed them we are looking forward to those mainly because the fans love the characters.

I always worry about DC making the films so serious that you don’t actually get to identify with the characters (insert why so serious meme here) and now you have the added issue with so many characters vying for screen time that it is going to be a monumental task to get the audience to get to grips with the characters. Ironically I think that Heath Ledger’s Joker was the most human character that DC has put out, because there was some humour there, granted it was all messed up but it made the character human.

I seriously hope that this is going to be a great success because who doesn’t want another awesome movie, but I will remain cautiously optimistic.

Remember how we all pointed and laughed at WB when their casting wish was revealed? I was like, “Will Smith, Tom Hardy? Yeah, right, losers!”….
Now I’m surfing the internet trying to find out what wine to pair with this serving of crow I’m about to eat.
