And your 2015 Golden Globe nominees are…

The Hollywood awards season is officially in full swing as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s nominations for the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced last night at the Beverly Hills Hilton. The Globes has always been regarded as not just the slightly more fun, more relaxed cousin to the more stuck-up Oscars (especially since the fantastic duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be on hosting duties again), but is usually also a very good indicator of which way the Academy’s voting patterns will go for the much more prestigious award. Unless, of course you’re Ben Affleck, which means you’ll get nominated for and win Best Director at the Globes and everywhere else, but get stiffed at the Oscars.

But I digress… Back to the nominations, and there were a few strange snubs this time around, with the biggest being David Fincher being nominated for Best Director for Gone Girl, but the film itself not getting the nod for Best Picture.
Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken– which may not be the best movie of 2014, but definitely boasted some individual performances worthy of attention – was left completely out in the cold. And yet, Quevanzhane Wallis unexpectedly got the nod for Annie.

One very notable entry though was Selma‘s Ava DuVernay becoming the first black female director to ever be nominated for a Golden Globe. It’s not everyday that a bit of much welcomed history like that is made. Another interesting factoid is that of the 5 Best Picture nominees, 4 are based on the true stories of some well known or notorious individuals.Clearly, biopics are awards magnets.
