Yesterday we got the terrible news, courtesy of the recent Sony hack, confirming the rumours that Sony and Marvel were in fact in negotiations to co-produce a new Spider-Man trilogy with Marvel wanting to actually bring Spidey into their cinematic universe to debut in Captain America: Civil War. The “terrible” part of this news was due to the fact that Sony had in fact pulled out of the deal.

But now frequent rumour-mongers Latino-Review (who have been proven right with a huge percentage of their superhero movie claims recently), are bringing some new info to the table. According to their sources, Sony didn’t reject the Marvel produced trilogy deal after all, but rather a different deal in which Marvel and Sony would split the cost of the movie 60/40 respectively. The aforementioned trilogy deal is still very much on the table, and may be getting a big push from the Sony powers that be over in Japan.

What I’m hearing from my little birds is that Sony, the parent company, views Sony Pictures’s handling of the Spider-Man property as disappointing. Sony wants to be all about “quality” films (actual one-word quote, not air quotes), and the Amazing Spider-Man movies have not been that, nor have the rumors of future films in the franchise. Sony Japan thinks the Marvel deal for Spider-Man is still on the table and they want to renegotiate as a return to quality, the 60/40 split is can be negotiated and Sony Entertainment’s October hard-line stance of wanting creative control is now mostly moot in the eyes of the higher-ups.

What this means – if true – is that we may yet see Spider-Man showing up in a Marvel produced movie after all. And if that were to happen, there’s even a possible director who has already popped up. It would seem that when the Wall Street Journal broke the story of Sony and Marvel’s possible deal, it initially stated that “[Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal] also talked to Sam Raimi, who directed the studio’s first three ‘Spider-Man’ movies, about returning to the franchise, possibly to direct again or as a producer.” For some undisclosed reason, the Wall Street Journal subsequently removed this line from their story, but not before it was picked up by /Film.

Why they removed it, I do not know. What I do know though, is that Raimi directing the Amazing Spider-Man’s cast is a very enticing proposition. Yes, his Spider-Man 3 is much maligned, but that was essentially Raimi giving the studio the finger after they shot down his original ideas and insisted on cramming in more characters. For a long time, Raimi’s Spider-Man was considered the very high benchmark for superhero movies. With a good script – I actually dug his original ideas for Spider-Man 3 using John Malkovich as the Vulture – and Andrew Garfield and co in tow as well, Raimi could work some serious magic.
