Top 10 Movies: South Africa edition

The year is just about done and it’s time to tally the goods of 2014, including the year’s biggest films in South Africa. The local industry has released its top performers of the year and it’s actually what you’d expect, though with a few surprises. The year was ruled by the fourth Transformers film and animated movies also made a good showing. But comic books performed the best, taking up three of the spots. Seven of the top ten movies are sequels of some form.

03. Amazing Spider-man 2 Rise Of Electro (R 21.9 million)
04. Rio 2 (R 21.4 million)
05. X-men: Days Of Future Past (R 17.9 million)
06. 22 Jump Street (R 17.7 million)
07. Step Up: All In (R 16.9 million)
08. The Other Woman (R 16.6 million)
09. Guardians Of The Galaxy R 16.4 million)
10. Lucy (R 15.9 million)

As mentioned earlier, not many surprises, though no doubt many people must be wondering how the latest Transformers did so well. A few will also cast their hands to the heavens and ask why so many people went to watch the Spider-Man sequel. Local moviegoers must love Cameron Diaz, as her The Other Woman and 22 Jump Street are the only genre comedies on the list. South Africa appears to have a lot of Step Up fans, but we can take solace that many also enjoyed the strange existential action film Lucy, which is also Luc Besson’s all-time best-earning creation as a director.

There are a few big names glaringly absent, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Interstellar, The Lego Movie and the latest Hunger Games – though the above does not tally in December releases.
