So, what where the big global hits of the year? The main winner of 2014 won’t surprise many readers of this blog, but no promise it won’t cause outrage. Transformers: Age Of Extinction cleaned up globally and is the only movie to break through the billion dollar mark. That also makes it the second in its franchise to reach that distinction.

Here’s the breakdown for the year, sourced from Box Office Mojo:

01. Transformers: Age of Extinction ($1,087 billion)
02. Guardians of the Galaxy ($772.1 million)
03. Maleficent ($757.8 million)
04. X-Men: Days of Future Past ($746 million)
05. Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714.1 million)
06. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($709 million)
07. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($708.3 million)
08. Interstellar ($622.9 million)
09. How to Train Your Dragon 2 ($618.9 million)
10. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 ($613.4 million)

Guardians of the Galaxy made a strong showing at number 2, taking in more than either the first Iron Man or Thor managed. Angelina Jolie shows that it is worth gambling your career on her demands with Maleficent‘s performance and the X-Men franchise holds on strongly – it’s the best performance for a film in that franchise. The Captain America and Planet of the Apes sequels both outperformed their predecessors, but Spider-Man 2 fell short of its prequel by $50 million.

Interstellar did well, but is still $100 million behind last year’s sci-fi flagship Gravity. The foreign market also asserts itself again, this time with How To Train Your Dragon 2. It underperformed to the first movie in the U.S. market, but made over $200 million more globally. The Hunger Games shows its muscle at the tenth spot, despite opening less than a month ago. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see how the third Hobbit performs.

Or maybe not get hyped so much. I honestly went in expecting AT LEAST Avengers levels of squeels of glee eminating from my gut. Alas… I think I put at least two people off from seeing in theatres.
