Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • I don’t need any further reason to be excited about Star Wars: The Force Awakens – I really, really don’t – but apparently Hollywood is going to give me more anyway. Because according to a very solid sounding rumour from TwitchFilm, a trio of stars from martial arts extravaganza The Raid 2 have silently joined JJ Abrams’ production. Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman, who played hero Rama, Mad Dog/Prakoso and The Assassin respectively, will all be appearing in undisclosed roles. This may be a rumour at the moment, but seeing as Todd Brown, the guy reporting this for Twitch, actually co-produced The Raid 1 & 2, I think he would know for certain what these actors are up to. Also, holy freaking crap!
  • Eddie Redmayne is currently riding a huge wave of praise for his awards-worthy performance as Stephen Hawking in Theory of Everything, but the actor wasn’t always so well received. Especially when it comes to auditioning for a *ahem* small role.

  • So did you enjoy or hate Peter Capaldi’s first run as a Time Lord in the last season of Doctor Who? Irrespective of whether or not you’re a fan of the “attack eyebrows”, the fact remains that you watched it. And by “you” I mean, a crap lot of you over in America, as season 8 of the modern incarnation of the long-running sci-fi series has EXTEEEERRRRMINATED the previous ratings records to become the biggest season of Doctor Who ever in the US.
  • And if you don’t enjoy Capaldi’s take on the Doctor, it’s a pretty sure bet as what he would tell you in return.

  • Poster of the day: Jaws

  • Despite giving logic the back-breaker in its final installments, Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy will more than likely cast a palpable shadow over any future cinematic adaptations of Batman. Nolan gave us an incredible version of the character, but in retrospect, he was a very odd choice to tackle the Caped Crusader. In an interview with THR, Nolan explains just how he ended up helming the what would eventually be a called a “reboot”.

“It came to me in a very interesting way, which was my agent, Dan Aloni, called and said, ‘It seems unlikely you’d be interested in this, but Warners is sort of casting around for what they would do with Batman.’ It had reached the end of its last sort of life, if you’d like. And at the time, nobody used the term “reboot” — that didn’t exist — so it was really a question of, ‘What would you do with this?’ I said, ‘Well, actually, that is something I’m interested in,’ because one of the great films that I am very influenced by that we haven’t talked about was Dick Donner’s Superman….And so I was able to get in the studio and say, ‘Well, that’s what I would do with it.’ I don’t even know who was first banging around the term ‘reboot’ or whatever, but it was after Batman Begins, so we didn’t have any kind of reference for that idea of kind of resetting a franchise. It was more a thing of, ‘Nobody’s ever made this origin story in this way and treated it as a piece of action filmmaking, a sort of contemporary action blockbuster.’

“What I loved about Superman was the way New York felt like New York, or rather Metropolis felt like New York. Metropolis felt like a city you could recognize — and then there was this guy flying through the streets. ‘That’s amazing, so let’s do that for Batman, and let’s start by putting together an amazing cast,’ which is what they had done with that film, but which I hadn’t seen done since — they had everybody from [Marlon Brando] to Glenn Ford, playing Superman’s dad, you know, it was an incredible cast. So we started putting together this amazing cast based around Christian [Bale], who seemed perfect for Batman, but bringing him Sir Michael Caine and Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman and Tom Wilkinson. It was just incredible.”

  • After putting in what is being considered by many to be an Oscar-worthy performance as Martin Luther King Jr in Selma, David Oyelowo’s name is on everybody’s lips. Unfortunately, it more than likely will just stay there, as they struggle to pronounce it. But now the British actor, born of Nigerian parents, will never again have his name mangled thanks to Brad Pitt’s sing-along speech at the recent Palm Springs International Film Festival.

  • I sense a disturbance in the Force, bitch! A rumour swirled recently that not only would one of the upcoming Star Wars spinoff movies be focused on a young Han Solo, but that Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul was attached to the project. Know who’s very happy about that news? Aaron Paul. Job security, yo!

  • Olivia Wilde has always been known as quite a looker, but now she’s looking downright creepy in this first image from The Lazarus Effect, the latest effort from uber-successful shoestring budget horror flick production studio Blumhouse Productions. The movie, which co-stars Mark DuPlass, Evan Peters and Donald Glover follows “a team of research students mapping the human brain. When they accidentally kill one of their own, they unwittingly unlock a deadly force by reanimating their colleague. Fighting for their own lives, the team must contain their colleague in the lab before she is unleashed on the world.”

  • Hey, sweetie darling! If you’re a fan of classic British comedy Absolutely Fabulous, then here’s some, well, absolutely fabulous news! A movie spinoff of the show which starred Jennifer Saunders as a ditzy, permanently sloshed PR exec and Joanna Lumley as her vampy, hard partying best friend has been spoken about for ages, but now, 20 years later, it seems like it’s finally happening. And all because of a bet on radio, as Saunders herself explains.

“I’ve finished the first draft. I’m feeling euphoric. My proper New Year’s resolution is to do the film, otherwise it’ll be a pointless year of procrastination.”

“Joanna Lumley kept announcing it and saying, ‘Yes she’s going to do it,’ and then Dawn French on our radio show at Christmas said, ‘I bet £100,000 that you don’t write it. So now I have to write it, otherwise I have to pay her £100,000.”

  • In one of the last Extras of last year we posted a Final Cut, a mashup of all the cool movies of 2014. But now, it’s a new year, and time to look ahead. So here’s the First Cut, a mashup of all the cool movies we expect to see this year!
