Be still my beating heart. Marvel have just issued a press release announcing two-time Golden Globe winner and Oscar-nominated actor Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica, Stand and Deliver) will join Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a major recurring role during the latter half of the second season of the show, which is currently in the midst of its mid-season break. Olmos will play a character named Robert Gonzales and is set to have a great impact on Coulson and the team.

Given the events that transpired during the course of the mid-season finale (no spoilers, why haven’t you watched it, what’s wrong with you?) I’m hoping he assists the team instead of opposing them as his strong and dignified screen presence would be a good foil for the more wry and/or excitable S.H.I.E.L.D. agents; and when it comes to dealing with the inhuman threats the team faces on a regular basis there’s no one you want on your side more than the man who faced down the Cylon threat. Also, if he doesn’t come face to face with Deathlok at some point and make a snarky toaster comment, it’ll be Adama shame (hah!).

This is the second veteran actor to score a recurring role on the show after Kyle MacLachlan earlier in this season, and that worked out very well indeed. It makes me look forward to the show’s resumption in March even more. Are you as pleased as I am at this announcement?

The full press release follows below:

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has just added another new face for its March return to ABC with Edward James Olmos!

Olmos will play Robert Gonzales, whose debut this spring in “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will have massive repercussions for Director Coulson and his team.

“Edward James Olmos brings an amazing gravitas to any role he inhabits, something we knew we needed for Robert Gonzales,” said Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “When Olmos first appears on our series, everyone will have to take notice–including our favorite Agents.” [Not all of them. Too soon?]

Best known for roles in “Battlestar Galactica,” “Blade Runner,” and “Miami Vice,” Olmos twice earned the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV with his work on “Miami Vice” and “The Burning Season.” In addition, Olmos earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role with “Stand and Deliver.”

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is Executive Produced by Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers, “Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agent Carter,” “Marvel’s Daredevil,” “Lost”).

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns on Tuesday, March 3 at 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC. For more information on the series and the other exciting Marvel Television projects, stay tuned to Marvel.com.
