Please tell me someone got the Batman pun in the title? *Ahem* anyway, here’s what’s opening this week…

Birdman

birdman

Birdman is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor – famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.

Lauded as a truly original film (and how often do you get to say that?) Birdman is unexpected and strange, with Michael Keaton excelling in his demanding role, and making a welcome return to the limelight. Although it’s not without some negative reviews, Birdman has nevertheless wowed most critics into 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

St. Vincent

StVincent

Maggie, a single mother, moves into a new home in Brooklyn with her 12-year old son, Oliver. Forced to work long hours, she has no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of their new neighbour, Vincent, a retired curmudgeon with a penchant for alcohol and gambling, and an odd friendship soon blossoms between the improbable pair.

While it might be sentimental and predictable, as always Bill Murray gives an outstanding performance, with enough caustic charm to keep St. Vincent from getting too sickly sweet. Even if it’s ‘only’ got 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s still a Bill Murray movie, and you’ll probably go watch it just for him.

Seventh Son

SeventhSon

An evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. The last of the Falcon Knights, Master Gregory, imprisoned a malevolently powerful witch many years ago, but she escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory. In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. He has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train a new apprentice to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man’s only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.

So far there aren’t many reviews on Seventh Son, which is never a good thing. From what I can gather from the trailer, you can expect bombastic, over the top special effects to be accompanied by wooden acting and a thin, predictable plot. I just wonder what convinced the likes of Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore to sign on?

Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast

legend-of-the-neverbeast

Legend of the NeverBeast takes Tinker Bell and the Disney Fairies on an epic action adventure that’s full of heart and edge-of-your-seat suspense. Fun and talented animal fairy Fawn believes you can’t judge a book by its cover – or an animal by its fangs – so she befriends a huge and mysterious creature known as the NeverBeast. While Tink and her friends aren’t so sure about this scary addition to Pixie Hollow, the elite Scout Fairies set out to capture the monster before he destroys their home. Fawn must trust her heart and take a leap of faith if she hopes to rally the girls to save the NeverBeast.

Well, it’s a Disney movie about fairies and… stuff. You read the plot summary. I’m sure there will be lots of magic, sparkles and lessons to be learned while the day is undoubtedly saved. While the kids will definitely be charmed, parents shouldn’t be too bored. And let’s face it, if your kids have decided what this is what you’re watching this weekend, 63% on Rotten Tomatoes probably isn’t going to dissuade them!

It feels like Jeff Bridges is just trying to jump onto as many YA-type movies as possible in the hopes of getting a Hunger Games-esque hit. The Giver was a serious let down for me (after enjoying the book) and Seventh Son looks fairly lame too.

I haven’t seen The Giver, but Seventh Son looks awfully predictable! Poor Jeff Bridges…
