Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • So everybody’s still talking about the Oscar snubs for Selma and The LEGO Movie, with some folks getting very serious about the whole. The LEGO Movie co-director Phil Lord was very quick though with his response, posting it just minutes after the nominations were revealed. And in typical fashion, it’s a bit of a laugh.

He did also respond later with more than just funny pictures though, giving this statement to THR while at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

“We made it in order to inspire families and kids and people and we’ve been really justly rewarded I think for that. We feel really lucky and the awards stuff is it’s own thing, and of course we’re disappointed, but it’s not the reason we made the movie. There’s no way to not be pleased with the outcome of this film.”

“We were a trending topic [on Twitter[. It’s way more permanent right next to ‘Dick Poop.’ Seeing the of name of your film next to words Dick Poop is a real honor.”

  • And if you’re wondering what the deal is with “Dick Poop”, that’s how Academy President Cheryl Boone accidentally referred to veteran cinematographer Dick Pope when he she read out his nomination for his work on Mr. Turner. That’s one of the best Awards snafus since John Travolta introduced Idina Menzel as Adele Dazeem at last year’s show.
  • Poster of the day: Scanners

  • Micheal Keaton’s career turnaround has been nothing short of amazing, as he went from years of DTV work to serious Oscar contender again. If I had to hazard a guess about how he’s feeling about his life right now, I would say that… he’s loving it. Yes, that was indeed nothing more than a very terrible segue into the news that Keaton is apparently in talks to play McDonalds founder Ray Croc in The Founder, director John Lee Hancock’s planned biopic of the fast food mogul. No, I am not sorry for that horrible joke earlier.
  • Yesterday we posted a vid of what lovable Star Wars droid R2-D2 could possibly be saying with his squeak and whistles. He is of course one of many popular characters in film and TV where the audience has no clue what they’re saying (Zet doesn’t count, somehow we all know what that big-eyed weirdo was saying!), and yet, they all can probably understand each other.

  • Look, when you call your movie Kong: Skull Island, it’s not unfair for people to expect it to be set in a place called Skull Island. But apparently that’s not entirely the case, as JK Simmons explained to MTV when the recent Oscar nominee spoke about how he involved in Legendary’s upcoming King Kong prequel.

“When it first came to my attention, ‘There’s interest in you for a new ‘King Kong,’ I thought, ‘Okay… Why?’. But then I met with Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who’s going to be directing it and John Gatins, who’s writing and Tom [Hiddleston]. Jordan was just so passionate and so smart. It’s such an e, new take on it. It’s set in Detroit in 1971, which is where I grew up. We’re going to shoot it in Detroit during baseball season, so I’ll be able to go to Tigers games! There’s a lot to like about this movie!”

Detroit 1971? But the original King Kong was set in the 40’s! What, is Kong a Time Lord now who decided to go get involved in America’s booming automotive industry for a while?

  • Were you planning on sleeping peacefully tonight? Yes? Then allow me to dissuade you of those illusions with this creeptastic first look at the Tracey brothers from the upcoming Thunderbirds Are Go! animated series. This new take – which boasts the voice talents of Rosamund Pike and Thomas Brodie-Sangster among others – on the classic British series will be using CGI to mimic the look of the old puppets used in the original, and the result is kind of unsettling. Nightmares are go!

  • HBO’s Game of Thrones is set to start its fifth season in April, so as a way to both remind people of the events of last season, and to build up hype, HBO arranged for screenings of the last two episode of season four to play at a select few IMAX screens in the US for a few days at the end of this month. HBO clearly doesn’t know how popular Game of Thrones is (and you would think they would, what with it being a ratings juggernaut), as the response has been so overwhelming that they’ve now pushed back the screening to make arrangements for a whole lof of additional IMAX venues – over 200, to be exact – to get in on the action with the screenings now running from January 29 to February 5. What’s more, the first 300 people at each venue will be getting an incredible SPOILER-tastic Game of Thrones poster.

This is now the part where I make you ugly-cry by telling you that no, our local IMAX cinemas are not involved in this.

“I think if audiences go and see it, and they like these characters… I mean I’d love to do something with Forest [Whitaker] again, and if it’s in a Taken 4 scenario…great”.

And in case you wondering, yes, audiences definitely went to see Taken 3 this past weekend. Double sigh.

  • Jeez, it’s been like all of 3 seconds since I wrote about the possibility of Taken 4, and they’ve already cut a trailer for it!
