A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the SyFy Channel still knew how to spell their own name, and every week saw them filling our TV screens with tales of alien worlds, magnificent space battles and fat Apollo (yes, we still remember that, Jamie Bamber). It was indeed a good time to be a sci-fi geek.

SyFy still can’t spell their name properly, but at least they unveiled a plan last year to bring all those other cool stuff back, once again tapping into that core geek audience. We’ve already seen the first step in this plan in the promising miniseries-that-wants-to-become-a-full-series Ascension , but the TV network’s actual proper return to the space operas that made them famous is The Expanse , an adaptation of the “Leviathan Wakes”, the first book in James S.A. Covrey’s “Expanse Saga”. And now we finally have a trailer for it, and it looks good!

Besides for a fedora-wearing Thomas Jane and zero-gravity space sex (always a winner in these things!), The Expanse also boasts quite a support cast consisting of the likes of  Jared Harris, Jonathan Banks, Shohreh Aghdashloo and more. And although the on-screen text only refers to “the writers of Children of Men and Iron Man” – Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby – the episodes are all also co-written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. If those last two names don’t sound familiar, it’s because original Expansauthor James S.A. Corey is actually the fictional pen-name of Abraham and Franck. So with the original writers on board, at least you know this won’t deviate too much from their critically acclaimed novel.

Speaking of which, here’s the synopsis from “Leviathan Wakes”, so you can know what this whole thing is actually about, since this trailer admittedly doesn’t paint a very clear picture of it.

Humanity has colonized the solar system – Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond – but the stars are still out of our reach.

Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, The Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for – and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.

Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to The Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.

Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations – and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe.

There’s no premiere date set yet for The Expanse‘s 10-episode 1st season, but I’m sure that with SyFy hoping to position this as the next Battlestar Galactica  – with the series already boasting 5 novels with another 4 planned, there’s certainly enough material for that – I’m sure that the network will be setting a prime release date soon.

  1. I enjoyed the series, but I thought it was just a trilogy. Happy days!
