Last week we heard the news that Tom Hardy had dropped out of Warner Bros/DC Comics’ seriously star-studded supervillain team-up movie Suicide Squad. At the time, the reason for Hardy’s departure was assumed to be scheduling related, but recently it’s emerged that that fan-favourite actor apparently took issue with some details of the finished script, which he only saw after signing up. The David Ayer written/directed Suicide Squad follows a group of incarcerated villains forced into being a task force for the government, and would have seen Hardy play Rick Flagg, the good-natured military man assigned to lead the group, a role that could now go to Jake Gyllenhaal.

But just what was Hardy’s problem with the script? Well, for that we have to go deep into SPOILER territory. Now these details are not confirmed but sound plausible, so please stop scrolling down now if you want to go into the movie fresh. As for the rest of, I’ll see you after the jump!

Frequent rumour-mongers Latino Review, who have a decent track record with these things, claim to have two different sources with insider knowledge of the film’s script, and they’ve given a very detailed rundown of the premise for the film as well as how all the film’s A-list cast (including Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as the Joker, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, and Viola David as Amanda Waller) fit into it all.

Deadshot and Harley Quinn meet early when Deadshot is assassinating an inmate that is being transported from Arkham. Quinn disrupts the hit when she tries to break Joker out and both are captured and taken to Amanda Waller’s prison.

Waller has Joker moved to the prison as a means to keep Quinn in check. He spends most of the film in a cell, very much like Hannibal Lecter, until he breaks out in the end.
Boomerang is already in the Squad and there is a contention between he and Deadshot, Deadshot killed his father.

The team is tasked on a mission to prevent ‘bio weaponry’ from being sold to Lex Luthor by a human trafficking gang. They are implanted with explosive devices and forced to be part of a mission where they are attacking an arms dealer’s convoy. They are supposed to steal a weapon but end up capturing a woman called June [aka The Enchantress], she has a split personality and her evil side is a sorceress. They take her back to the prison where she is kept in an underground area, which has all sorts of genetic freaks imprisoned including King Shark.

Waller is tracking down and capturing every super powered hero and villain and it is implied that she is after Batman but he is not in the film, only mentioned and shown on camera footage. The film is being used as a set up for the franchises villains and not only the Suicide Squad. Belle Reve (the prison) is home to many of villains beyond the leads.

Rick Flag is there as a watchdog over Waller. The twist is his character is revealed as being in league with the villain, Rick Flag Snr at the end. (This is what I believe may have been the reason Hardy left) It is out of left field. They want the weapons that Waller has amassed.

There is a lot of action in the script but it primarily deals with Deadshot, Harley Quinn and the Joker. Flag is more of a government agent than anything else before his reveal as a villain.

So it appears that Hardy wasn’t happy that in this draft of the script his heroic character – arguably the only one in the cast – ends up being just another villain in the end, as well as the fact that he has limited screentime (even though it is noted that he is in two of the film’s big action scenes). Now you may have noticed that I said “in this draft of the script”, and that’s because LR’s sources indicate that while this is the script currently making the rounds with WB/DC execs who are very happy with it, it will most likely be getting a rewrite before going into production. That means that a lot of things could still change and be completely different to this description.

Hopefully not everything though as I really dig the idea of a Hannibal Lecter type Joker. The Clown Prince of Crime has never exactly been a front line kind of foot soldier. He does his best work when he’s pulling the strings from behind the scenes.

Also using this film to introduce several villains that can later be used in other franchises is an intriguing tactic. That makes Suicide Squad sort of the counterpoint to Justice League, and would explain why WB/DC have loaded the cast with this much star power. It will also make the job of future movies much easier as half their work would already have been done in laying down the origin for their characters.

Suicide Squad was always the most intriguing out of WB/DC’s entire lineup and if this story is true, it would certain justify that assessment.

  1. I’m quite looking forward to this movie. A pity Tom Hardy left – he was brilliant in the movie Warrior and seriously good as Bane in Dark Knight Rises (perhaps the highlight of that movie), so I think he’d have been perfect for this type of physical, action-orientated role.
