World War Z

Despite a somewhat troubled production and the film being a tad on the bland side, 2013’s World War Z still managed to rake in over $500 million globally. And that’s a sum that brings all the studio boys to the yard, as a sequel is indeed on the way. But what kind of story would World War ZZ Top tell?

After all (MASSIVE SPOILER TIME GO EAT SOME BRAINS STOP READING THIS HEY THAT’S A NICE SCARF THAT BRAD PITT WORE IN THE FILM), World War Z pretty much ended with mankind rising up and fighting back, thanks to Pitt’s character coming up with a way to hide the presence of humans from the undead and infected.

Right at the end of the film, the day was practically saved, so where does one go from there? According to writer Steven “Locke” Knight, the answer lies in a fresh slate, as he explained to Thompson on Hollywood:

He’s writing the treatment for the sequel for Brad Pitt’s Plan B’s “World War Z,” which is set to shoot in October for 2016 release. “I thought, ‘why not? What fun.’ It’s not quite like the other, we’re starting with clean slate. When they’ve signed off we’re on.”

One way that a sequel could work, is to have a story that runs parallel to the events of the first film. Of course, you run the risk of losing Pitt, a bankable star who helped sell the first film. Then again, jumping forward in time to a new problem, could solve that issue.

It’s an intriguing setup, and with the first movie making enough cash to justify the reshoots that it had to undergo, hopefully the sequel will have more freedom to proceed in this fresh direction.
