Melissa Benoist cast as CBS' SUPERGIRL

As per Coming Soon, Melissa Benoist (Glee, Whiplash) is television’s newest superhero after being cast as the titular hero of CBS’ upcoming Supergirl series (we first told you about it here). I’m not familiar with her work as I haven’t seen Glee, or any of the other series in which she’s had minor parts like Homeland, The Good Wife or Law & Order, but Whiplash has been on my radar for a while and this just makes me more interested to see it. No other casting announcements have been confirmed for the show as yet.

The pilot episode has been written by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash) and Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family), and both will also serve as producers on the show. The involvement of the former is what’s given rise to speculation (I said it) that Supergirl could possibly cross-over (he said it) with Arrow and/or The Flash. Cue musical number with the other Glee-alum Grant Gustin and current superhero The Flash.

Based on the DC Comics character Supergirl, Benoist would play the young Kara Zor-El aka Kara Danvers who is adopted by a human family after arriving on Earth following the destruction of her homeworld Krypton. Hiding her powers over the last decade for fear of discovery, she’s forced to display her abilities in public to avert a disaster.

Now I’ve made no secret that this is a show I’m interested in seeing as I think it’ll have a different tone from the current DC Comics-based offerings and could be quite fun, not to mention having a female lead. The costume will be the next thing for me, please let it not be like what Adrianne Palicki was forced to wear in the aborted Wonder Woman pilot. And don’t complain that she’s not blonde – there’s a thing called “hair dye”.
