the blob 1988

For some reason, I have a sfot gooey center in my caustic being when it comes to The Blob. Not the 1958 version starring Steve McQueen but the remake of that from 1988 that had terrific suspense, fantastically terrible acting and special effects that sold the movie in an age before CGI become popular. It’s a magnificent horror movie, and a remake done right. Now, the remake is getting remade, as director Simon “The Expendables 2” West will helm a new version of The Blob.

According to Deadline, West is looking to start shooting later this year, once a screenwriter has been found for the project. Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten will produce the flick. According to West, it looks like this version of The Blob is going to go heavy on the CGI:

With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.

I understand that modern day CGI can really help the horror bukkake of The Blob and take it a step further, but I’ll feel that the 1988 flick succeeded by having practical effects that made me feel like a hapless hobo really was being digested alive by a sentient and malevolent puddle of goo from outer space. That being said, I’m still keen to give this remake the benefit of the doubt.
