Step aside Pennywise, it's time for CLOWN

There is a big word for the fear of clowns, one I’m not inclined to search and copy-paste right now. But I do know that our fear of clowns are actually due to the media perception that we should fear clowns. Some study figured this out a while ago: kids became scared of clowns because of all the evil clowns on TV. John Wayne Gacy certainly didn’t help, nor did Stephen King’s It (which may have been inspired by Gacy’s clown persona).

The movie Clown (not to be confused with this 2007 horror) seems to explore this myth, proposing some kind of demonic force embedded in a clown getup. Produced by Eli Roth, it tells the story of a man who dons a clown suit he found in his house for his kid’s party. But afterwards the suit won’t come off and he starts to transform into an evil entity with a growing appetite for children. Yup, a demon clown who eats kids. Not only does Roth’s involvement hint that this won’t be a light-hearted romp, but there has been a slew of new images from the film that also suggest this will be in Roth’s caliber, even though he is only producing.

Clown has been in the works since 2012 and was greenlit after Jon Watts and Christopher D. Ford released a mock trailer for the idea. Watts is directing and the pair wrote the script. Until now it has been under the radar, but I must say this looks like it could be awesome. There has not really been a major horror bogeyman for a while, unless you count Saw‘s Jigsaw – but that was more insane cult than demonic monster. A clown looks like the perfect source for this. Many have tried and there are a few notable stand-outs like House of 1,000 Corpses‘ Captain Spaulding, Killjoy‘s Killjoy and of course It‘s Pennywise.

But something tells me Clown could be the nastiest of them all. Check out these images and the trailer to see what I mean…
