Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • When James reported on the new Ghostbusters reboot cast yesterday, he mentioned that there were some “gnashing of teeth among some of The Movies’ writers”. Well, I’ll own up. I was a teeth gnasher. Mainly because, while I’m happy with 75% of the new cast, I really just don’t find Melissa McCarthy funny. But while I’m just not impressed by her comedic skills, some people downright hate her and of course proceeded to tell the internet about it in the worst possible way.
  • While The November Man was about as bland as water-flavoured sand, it wasn’t really Pierce Brosnan’s fault. The ex-James Bond star still looks to be a fitting action-man, even if the movie around him is crap. Unfortunately the movie did quite poorly at the box-office (it made a meagre $32 million globally), meaning that studios won’t be rushing up to offer him more action roles, despite how much Brosnan still wants them as can be seen in this funny new ad.

  • There are lots of famous What-If’s in the movie world, where certain filmmakers never got to realize their version of a story. This latest addition to that list though would have been incredible, and is probably going to keep the fanboys talking for ages. Comic book scribe Mark Millar chatted to IGN about Kick-Ass, his hit comic that has been adapted to two movies already. The breakout star of those movies is easily Chloe Moretz’s foul-mouthed, hyper-violent diminutive assassin Hit-Girl and according to Millar, the idea of a Hit-Girl solo movie was once considered. And just wait until you hear who they wanted to direct it.

“Before Kick-Ass 2 came out we’d been talking about a Hit-Girl spin-off movie. We’d even talked to a director – we had a couple of calls with Gareth Evans, who I absolutely love. He’s an amazing director. But Gareth’s now busy. Matthew [Vaughn] still floats it occasionally. I’m very philosophical about it – I’ve done my books and I’m really happy with the work and happy with the films. If anything else happens – gravy.”

The guy who made The Raid and The Raid: Beranthal, arguably the best action movies of the last decade, taking on Hit-Girl?! Holy killer little girls, Batman!!

  • I would never knowingly lie to you guys, so believe when I tell you that the reports that Kevin Spacey is going to star in upcoming comedy Nine Lives as “a workaholic businessman who suffers a terrible accident that leaves him trapped in the body of the family cat,” is in fact the truth. Yes, I know exactly how unbelievably ridiculous that previous sentence sounds.

  • With this year marking the third time in as many years that Bradley Cooper’s name has been in the mix for the Best Actor Oscar, I think it’s safe to say that his star potential is… ahem… limitless. Yes, that was in fact my reprehensible segue (sorry) into the story that CBS has picked up the pilot for Limitless, a TV series adaptation of the 2011 film of the same name which starred Cooper as a layabout writer who stumbles across an experimental drug that exponentially increases his mental faculties, allowing him to achieve incredible feats as he outsmarts his enemies. The TV series will still make use of the drug angle, but will follow “a man who discovers the mysterious drug NZT and is coerced into using his newfound, powerfully drug-enhanced abilities to solve weekly cases for the FBI”. Cooper will be executive producing this new TV take on the story along with original film director Neil Berger who will also helm the pilot episode.
  • The name Jimmy Olsen usually elicits images of a geeky befreckled red-head with catch-phrases so cheesy that they’re used to lure mice. But that’s all going to change with CBS’ upcoming Supergirl series (which recently cast Glee alum Melissa Benoist in the title role), because in the new superhero drama, the role of Superman’s best pal Jimmy is actually going to be played by True Blood actor Mehcad Brooks. You know, this guy:

Mehcad-Brooks

  • 8-time Oscar nominee The Imitation Game is currently my favourite movie of 2015, and it looks like the man behind it – who’s also up for one of those Oscars as Best Director – is already lining up his next project. Norwegian director Morden Tyldum has apparently signed on to helm Passengers, an upcoming sci-fi flick scripted by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) which has already secured the acting talents of Keanu Reeves and Rachel McAdams. After seeing how incredibly well Tyldum was able to balance drama, suspense and levity in Imitation Game, I think he could pretty much tackle anything. Here’s the official synopsis for the very intriguing sounding flick.

PASSENGERS centers on Jim Preston (Reeves), a mechanic on a 120-year journey to a distant colonized planet in another galaxy, who becomes the first traveler to experience pod hibernation failure. Having woken up 100 years too soon, he is stranded in the world of an interstellar spaceship with only robots and androids for companionship. A year into his journey, he decides to wake up a fellow passenger, a beautiful journalist named Aurora (McAdams). They fall in love but must soon deal not only with the revelation of Jim’s misjudged act of waking her but a major malfunction of the ship itself.

  • I don’t care what the box office numbers say, I absolutely loved the pulpy socks off of John Carter. Had the film’s production not have been as troubled, it may have ended up costing just a fraction of its final budget and hence would have been profitable enough to warrant the planned sequels. But alas, that’s not how the story played out, as I know quite well, thank you very much, no need to keep reminding me, James! But while I have a strong love of the movie, I won’t deny that it has some problems. Problems that are pointed all too humorously in this latest video from the guys as CinemaSins.

  • As we usually do when previews of big movies get released, Darryn will putting out a breakdown of the Fantastic Four trailer soon. Unfortunately for Darryn, I don’t see how he’s going to top this brilliant breakdown which not only proves that the Fox movie will indeed tie to the Marvel Cinematic universe, but will also be a time travel movie that has something to do with the Serial podcast.
  • In case you haven’t noticed, ladies kick ass! Yes, the change may not be happening as swiftly as we would like, but gone are the days of action movie heroism being solely the realm of dudes. Nowadays, with the likes of Black Widow, Lara Croft, Agent Carter, Wonder Woman, Lucy and more, sisters are definitely doing it for themselves. “It” being laying an unholy smack down on some baddies, as you can see in this really cool supercut. You can find a list of all the movies featured in this video over here.

Yeah, I wouldn’t mind one either. The car, I mean, not Pierce Brosnan.
