Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • When it comes to who Marvel should cast as their first major superhero movie lead in Captain Marvel, we’re firmly on the Katee Sackhoff bandwagon. One other name has been thrown around by fans though which has got us intrigued: Game of Thrones‘ Natalie Dormer. When Ryan Penagos, Executive Editorial Director for Marvel Digital Media Group and Marvel.com (who has a habit of responding to questions with animated gifs) was asked on his blog about the alluring Ms Dormer being up for the role, he responded with this teasing gif.

Is that some kind of sly nod that Dormer is in fact on Marvel’s radar? Or maybe that they’ve even had talks so far? I have no idea, but I sure as hell wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to post what is possibly the sexiest apple eating gif on the internet.

  • And from the beauty to the beasts! FilmmakerIQ has posted this incredible 30-minute long video essay on The History of Horror Movies to “dissect the history of horror, from its roots deep in Gothic literature, through B-movie status and director’s proving grounds to ultimate respectability as an important filmmaking genre.” For any fans of things that go bump (and also “stab”, “decapitate”, “possess”, “dismember”) in the night, I definitely recommend you check this out!

  • And for your ridiculous rumour of the day, there’s a story making the rounds that if Marvel gets Spider-Man back from Sony and into their cinematic wheelhouse again (as has been hinted at several times lately), then the studio want to bring back Tobey Maguire for the role to play an older Peter Parker in the MCU! Maguire of course played Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy of films, but ended his run as the webslinger with the much maligned Spider-Man 3, not leaving him many fans. What worsened his standing was just how much better in every way that Andrew Garfield was as Spidey.
  • Poster of the day: The Thing

“The Aykroyd family is delighted by this inheritance of the Ghostbusters torch by these most magnificent women in comedy. My great-grandfather, Dr. Sam Aykroyd, the original Ghostbuster, was a man who empowered women in his day and this is a beautiful development in the legacy of our family business.”

For those of you confused about grandpa Aykroyd “original ghostbuster” mention, it’s because old man Aykroyd was actually a paranormal investigator, which may have been one of the major influences for the first film.

Yeah, because there’s so much substance behind Jar Jar Binks and Hayden Christensen, right?

  • While director Noam Murro did nothing more than a fairly decent Zack Snyder impersonation on 300: Rise of an Empire, I am very intrigued by Blink, the suspense thriller that the Israeli-born director has just signed on to helm. The script, which was included in last year’s vaunted Black List, follows “a man left fully paralyzed during an infamous, unsolved bank robbery. Years later, he is taken hostage for the secrets in his head….[and] must outwit his captors and solve the mystery of the heist.”

The twist? Since the man is fully paralyzed, he can only move his eyes! Can anybody check if Daniel Day-Lewis is free? I think we just found his next acting challenge!

  • Let’s face it. Unless your YA movie has the words “Hunger” and “Games” in it, there’s a good chance is going to be bad. Which is why  The Maze Runner was such a real pleasant surprise. It wasn’t the best movie ever made, but it was solidly acted and incredibly thrilling. Enough so that people flocked to see it, netting it a whopping $340 million off just a $34 million budget, making it one of the most successful films of last year and kickstarting a new franchise. And none of those accolades are going to stop us from making fun of it.

Yeah, I know. But its small enough of a role that it shouldn’t be a problem.
