Jason Momoa talks AQUAMAN; keeping secrets and what he will look like

Go ahead punk... make an Aquaman joke.

During a recent panel discussion at Sundance (via Geek Tyrant) Jason Momoa answered a few questions about his superheroic debut as the King of Stargate Atlantis, Aquaman, in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

When it comes to his character’s portrayal in the movie, especially after the orgy of destruction visited upon the world’s oceans and THAT THING Superman did, he said:

“Well, things are going to be a little different. When I first went in I met with Zack [Snyder]. His idea is pretty amazing. When I went in, he told me…my jaw kind of dropped. My jaw doesn’t normally drop. What he has planned for the DC world and for…definitely for Aquaman is something that, you know…I think I was brought on for a certain reason and they got some really cool plans for him. I’m really excited for everyone to see it.”

While Aquaman’s appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was supposed to come as a surprise, it was a terribly kept secret that Momoa was cast as the character and it took a while before he cracked and actually spoke about the role himself. When asked again why he’d consistently denied all the rumours:

“Last year, when I was on this panel I was like eating chicken breasts and in training when I wasn’t supposed to talk about anything. I wasn’t supposed to say anything until 2016. So I told a bunch of people that they could punch me in the face if I was on it, so I’m going to get hit a couple times. But they finally released it. I was supposed to keep it a secret for 3 years.”

I think you’re safe from being punched in the face Mr Momoa, not many people carry step ladders around with them.

Swoon!

He was also asked how closely he would resemble Aquaman’s traditional appearance:

“I don’t think he is going to be blonde or white. I can’t really tell you because I haven’t shot it yet. I hate to disappoint. But um, you know, I’m a little different than what those others [look like]. I hope you watch it with an open heart.”

Looks like someone’s aware of the stormy tea cups whenever perfect Aryan specimens aren’t chosen for roles where ethnicity doesn’t actually make a difference. I think the imposing dreadlocked Momoa is a better fit for Aquaman than the golden surfer stereotype. My hype for the movie is slowly building (especially since Karl Urban is rumoured to be the villain) and I’m quite interested to see how he’ll fit into the scheme of things, how about you?

Very interested. I know NOTHING about Aquaman and so look forward to being educated. And how he fits into the universe, wow, that is a big question.

Me too. I’m hoping Dory & Nemo make a surprise cameo.

Pretty cool actually. I wasn’t an Aquaman fan so I don’t really care about the ethnicity of the character. Same for the Johnny Storm debacle, anything would be better than the last Fab4 movies.
