You think this new trailer for JURASSIC WORLD will scare the kids?

Initially, I wasn’t on-board with Jurassic World. Sequels to classic franchises that show up two decades later don’t usually elicit confidence. But then star Chris Pratt just had to go and evolve into the type of leading man action hero that only a Nazi with toothache could not love. And if you were still on the fence after that despite Pratt’s clear awesomeness, then the movie’s first trailer certainly went a long way to rectify that. And thanks to this weekend past’s Super Bowl, we now we have another look that should be drawing you in even more.

Sure some of the ideas that director/co-writer Colin Treverrow is bringing to the table in this sequel – like genetically engineering a dinosaur – might be a bit crazy, but is it really that much crazier than, oh I don’t know, genetically engineering a dinosaur from mosquito leftovers? One of those crazy ideas is of course the fact that Pratt’s character Owen now has some velociraptors at his disposal. Some people have scoffed at the idea of “remote control raptors” or “raptor pets”, but as you can see in this new trailer that is far from the case here. Owen is closer to a lion tamer with these raptors. Yes, they occasionally listen to him and he’s trained them to do some stuff on command, but they can definitely still go all Siegfried and Roy (too soon?) at any minute.

Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park (1993), Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor’s interest, which backfires horribly.

My only concern at the moment, is that I’m seeing a number of shots – like the Indominus Rex terrorizing the young Ty Simpkins and Nick Robinson in those see-through globe-buggies – that appear to be homages to Steven Spielberg’s original classic. Too much of that nudge-nudge wink-wink stuff could detract from the actual movie (right, Star Trek Into Darkness?). One thing I do like that Treverrow is borrowing from Spielberg, is that there are a number of shots here that feature what appear to be practical, animatronic dinos. That is fantastic news, as one of the reasons why Spielberg’s original has held up so well over the years is because of him not going fully CG.

And speaking of which, one thing about this new trailer though that some people have picked up on was that the VFX for scenes we’ve already seen looks a lot more polished this time around. After the first trailer dropped, some people were complaining about some of the very obvious CG shots – such as the massive gates to the park. It was revealed later that those were done only to get the first trailer out in time, and that a lot more post-production work was still being done. Well they weren’t kidding about that, as you can see by these four pics courtesy of Wired and IGN.

  1. Wait… So there weren’t any real Dinosaurs involved in the filming of this movie?! **mind blown** 😉

I really hope this is a good Jurassic Park movie and will erase the rather nasty aftertaste that JP3 left with us…
