As we heard yesterday, Disney’s legal department have already swung into action for a leaked image from the new Star Wars movie, serving a take-down notice on the image-sharing website Imageshack for hosting a still from The Force Awakens.

As James mentioned, this isn’t exactly news, but it is a reminder that studios hold things close to the chest. They’ve got their marketing strategies and they’ll be damned if some random forum user is going to undercut them. But, some people obviously feel differently, wanting to know everything as soon as possible and hating studios for keeping secrets about their precious films.

Personally, I’m on the side of the studio. Keeping details about a movie under wraps isn’t exactly life-changing, and it’s really not going to affect us one way or the other. I’m happy to get information as and when it’s doled out, and official screenshots and trailers tend to be better quality anyway. It also means that there might still be some surprises left by the time you get to sit down in the cinema.

Whose side are you on? Would you prefer stolen images of movie sets and leaked scraps of information to fuel the rumour mill, or are you happy to play along with the official marketing strategy?

Leaks can lead to fun discussions, I’m not interested in seeing leaked images or set pics though.

It’s like one of those people that announce’s some one’s pregnancy/engagement before the person gets to do it O_o

Once the official announcement is made, the magic is already lost.

I think that the studios only do this in order to drive the crap out of the hype train

Depends on the extent of the leak. Showing me pics of lightsabers and new X-wing designs are fine. Revealing all the details around how Luke Skywalker has been spending his missing years hiding out in a dark American city disguised as a homicidal clown, is not so cool.

I’d prefer less is more, ya’know?

Even now we can watch a movie trailer and know the exact plot of the film before we see it. There are some exceptions which are a real treat to watch, others probably need the teasers and production photos to get bums into seats at the theatre. Its difficult to distingush which is needed… The big reveal these sort of things carry can be awesome if left as a reveal.

These things are just so hard to avoid though, especially when photos and things are leaked unofficially. I’d rather wait for the official stuff at the very least, or go into the cinema without knowing anything.
