Are the January blues finally behind us? The local release schedule is perking up, but a few die-hards still hold onto the top 10 local charts.
Tak3n continues a steady hold over the charts. After two weeks in the number one spot, it only took one step down into second place. South Africans cannot get enough of Liam Neeson’s superspy, though this also shows that local audiences love action movies – something only Tak3n has really delivered on in the past few weeks.
Still, the explosions had to make space for Annie, the new version of the popular play and movie. The story of a little orphan girl and her undying optimism for tomorrow found a willing local audience. Like Tak3n it is anything but a critic’s darling, though the movie struggled past its break-even point in the U.S. Hopefully its performance here will be reflected elsewhere in the world as well.
The war epic Fury finally arrives to our screen, taking the third spot – perhaps not stealing some of Tak3n‘s glory because some are averse to war-themed movies. Still, it’s likely to stay in the top 10 for a while. The Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game dropped two spots from its debut last week to fourth, while newcomer Tracers – an action thriller – debuts at fifth. Paddington drops two spots to sixth in its third week at the movies.
Proving that cinemas remain a popular dumping ground for young kids, Tinkerbell & The Neverbeast continues to stay in the top 10, though it dropped two spots to seventh. The Seventh Son also maintained some momentum, but it also had the biggest drop of the week: four spots to eight. Big Hero 6 follows closely, dropping three spots to ninth. And the ‘superhero’ epic Barbie Princess Power dropped two spots to settle at tenth.
Leaving the list this week are Into The Woods, Night At The Museum 3 and Exodus: Gods & Kings – all which enjoyed good runs at the local box office.
Big Hero 6 remains the top earner on the top 10, brining in a total of R17,7 million.
