lost river

Ever since Ryan Gosling launched his career into the stratosphere with a boot to the face in Drive I’ve been a huge fan of his. Not only did it tug on the 80’s music vibes but his intensity was palpable and, well, rather quiet. Now he has decided to go behind the camera and has written and directed his début Lost River and it looks really intriguing. Talking to Total FilmDoctor Who star Matt Smith said the experience of working with Ryan was liberating and that he is really proud of the film:

“There was great freedom, and he sets up an environment where you can take risks….I’m really proud of this film. I loved the script. I think it’s very rare, particularly in Hollywood, that films like this are made. It operated on a different level. It has a dreamlike quality of magic realism. I’m very proud of it. I think they did a fantastic job in giving it an identity and life and tone that does the script justice.”

And the trailer certainly shows off a different looking Smith. Seeming to mix in an almost Bioshock (the video game) eeriness with a Clock Work Orange madness I think it looks great. Sadly critics at the Sundance Film festival didn’t and right now it’s sitting with an aggregate score of only 25% on Rotten Tomatoes (6.6 on IMDB). Still with Ryan Gosling casting a strong list of actors like Christina Hendricks (Drive), Saoirse Ronan (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Ben Mendelsohn (Starred Up) and even his wife Eva Mendes (Hitch) I think it’s definitely worth a watch! What’s it about? Well even with this synopsis I have no clue!

A single mother is swept into a dark underworld while her son discovers an underwater town.

Yeah, I am about as lost to what this movie is about as the title. Lost River is set to appear at limited cinemas and straight to DVD on 10 April.
