More than a decade ago, the most popular inverterbrate on television hit cinemas in a classic film that was haf family-fun, half trippy horror that involved David Hasslehoff, bubble parties and a mercenary fish who had a penchant for ripping the lips off of smartass petrol attendants. Now, there’s a new SpongeBob in town. And he just dethroned the current box office king, American Sniper.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water, took in over $56 million on opening in North America. That’s even better than the first film, which made over $32 million on opening back in 2004. For an animated brand that was at its peak around then, that’s a fantastic result that will see new life breathed into the syndicated series. February may also be a hot new month for animated films, as The Lego Movie did even better last year.

In third place, the Wachowski’s latest sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending opened up to a tepid third place with just $19 million in the bank from over 3100 screens in the US. That’s barely above the non-3D, non-inflated Speed Racer from seven years ago, as Jupiter Ascending was also meant to be out last year. Internationally, the film has only made $51.5 million so far, with the odds of it making back its budget being very unlikely at this point. Here’s the weekend estimates for everyone else:

  • The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water – $56 Million
  • American Sniper – $24.1 Million
  • Jupiter Ascending – $19 Million
  • Seventh Son – $7.1 Million
  • Paddington – $5.36 Million
  • Project Almanac – $5.33 Million
  • The Imitation Game – $4.88 Million
  • The Wedding Ringer – $4.8 Million
  • Black Or White – $4.5 Million
  • The Boy Next Door – $4.1 Million

Top ten departures this week include The Loft and Taken 3. Taking just $267 million, the final Taken film wasn’t exactly a smash hit like the previous film in the series (Taken 2 banked over $376 million), but considering that it was filmed with a $48 million budget, it was a success nonetheless.
