Well that didn’t take long. With former Sony chief Amy Pascal vacating her post last week, a deal has finally been struck between Disney and Sony. Thanks to those companies and most likely the fact that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was such a stinker of a movie, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is finally going home to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios announced today that Sony is bringing Marvel into the amazing world of Spider-Man.
Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.
Marvel and Sony Pictures are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films.
The new relationship follows a decade of speculation among fans about whether Spider-Man – who has always been an integral and important part of the larger Marvel Universe in the comic books – could become part of the Marvel Universe on the big screen. Spider-Man has more than 50 years of history in Marvel’s world, and with this deal, fans will be able to experience Spider-Man taking his rightful place among other Super Heroes in the MCU.
There’s no word yet as to how this new deal will impact current Spidey star Andrew Garfield and director Marc Webb. I’m hoping that Garfield stays on, as he truly is a great Spider-Man. From the sound of the deal, it looks like the Amazing Spider-Man franchise won’t be scrapped either, but rather folded into the MCU as well. A third reboot of Spider-Man isn’t needed by now, as audiences are already more than familiar with the character.
As for which film he’ll be in, there’s still time to possibly shove him into Captain America 3: Civil War and do the story some justice.
Despite it being a story of clashing ideologies between Iron Man and Captain America, Civil War had Spider-Man making some hard decisions, as he unmasked himself in support of Tony Stark’s superhero registration act, before he eventually decided to rebel against it and join Captain America’s resistance. Caught between two heroes, Spider-Man was the everyman character that audiences could relate to.
I’m really hoping that he can be placed organically into that film, to do it properly, because some quality web-slinging has been missing from the MCU for far too long now. It’s a great deal for Sony and Disney, but a deal where the fans win as well.

Plotline was waaayyyy to easy to guess and they bunched way too much villain back-story for way too many villains in it.
Apart from that it was miles better than the other Spider-Man movies.

Damn, this is awesome news! Garfield has been the sole consistently awesome person in the ASM franchise, so dumping him would be bad.
Now if only they could somehow retcon it that the whole of Amazing Spider-Man 2 was just an illusion caused by Loki…

My biggest problem with ASM2, was that for everything they did right, they messed up somewhere else. Garfield as Spidey? Perfect! That opening scene of Spidey cracking wise as he stops the truck? Perfect. Gwen’s moment? Perfect. And there are several other examples.
But then they shoe-horn in two villains, one of whom has some of the worst motivation ever (Spider-Man doesn’t know who I am, I must kill him). They try to force in the Sinister Six connection, instead of just letting it play out naturally. Goblin is just rammed into the script, resulting in a movie that feels like it has 3 different “last act” climaxes.
And that’s not taking into consideration the really dumb parts about Peter’s dad which add virtually nothing to the story, never mind being completely ludicrous in places (subway tokens in a calculator? secret underground labs? what?!).
Sony got too greedy and too impatient, and wanted that movie to do the work of two, maybe three other movies, all so that they could make their billion dollars and spin off this massive franchise full of crazy characters (they were considering a “Young Aunt May as a spy” movie. Think about that!).
In the end you have a movie that takes two steps forward, but three steps back, resulting in a mess that’s even more frustrating because the parts that it gets right are so awesome, just teasing us with what could have been.

I agree with what you are saying, a lot of the stuff they tried to cram in was a waste, but the rest of it made up for it and those are the parts I enjoyed.
And the guy was already a bit of a nut case. I saw it as he though Spider-Man knew who he was and then completely forgot about him. Some people have killed for less O_o
And what Marvel have done with Hulk is they accepted the fact that the 2 previous movies were kinda kak. But they moved forward and make reference to it, but they only improve on that.
They should keep the events of the previous movies and build up from there, but hold off from cramming in too many villains as per the Sony formula.

For me the Goblin bit wasn’t suppose to be a full arc on him, it was suppose to serve as a way to kill of Gwen(which is how it happens in the comics as well).
Rhino has always been a minor villain in the SM series though. He’s usually just an obstacle in a sense, or working for someone else who is the brains behind the story.
Given, they could of ended the movie after Gwen’s death, and left the bit about Rhino as a start to the next movie. But people would go nuts if the ending to the movie was that sad. I almost lost my man-card during that scene.

Yes, but it was all sloppy, rushed writing. Only introducing Harry as the Goblin in this film and instead fleshing out Electro more could have played out much better. Keep Gwen’s death for the mid-point climax of the next film, and then have Spidey face off against the Goblin at the end of that film.
But no, they needed to cram everything in here, so that they could get to all the spinoff movies which was going to make a billion dollars, according to Sony’s estimates. It was a greedy business decision and not one that was best for the movie.

i didnt mind goblin in ASM2 and ive never been overly concerned with directors taking”artistic liberties” when it comes to comic book movies, they need to in order to get a reliable timeline for future releases and involvement in other franchises. split one movie into two, repeat that with other characters for the sake of continuity and you move the next avengers movie down 3 years.
overall, i think ASM2 was a much more enjoayble movie than 1.
but rhino was laughable, its like they threw my childhood away, they could have just not included him at all.

Best news in a long time!! Marvel should be able to do SUCH a better job with the character. Can’t wait to see how they use him first… And totally agree – Andrew Garfield really needs to stay! He makes a great Spider-Man and has been the standout highlight of the Amazing Spider-Man movies.

Now how about this for a crazy fan pipe dream: Drew Goddard left being Daredevil showrunner so that he could work on Sinister Six. But with this new deal, all those badly thought out Spidey spinoffs are probably on the back burner. So why not bring Goddard back into the Marvel fold to pen the new Spidey solo movie? And then, seeing as how Joss Whedon probably won’t be directing Avengers 3 & 4, get him to helm Spider-Man! Yes, that’s right! The team of Cabin In the Woods reunited for a Spider-Man movie! The geeks would lose their crap all over the internet!

Been trying to find info on this. Sofar it’s “reported” that he isn’t going to reprise his role as Spider-Man.
