Rumour: Marvel wants Angelina Jolie to direct CAPTAIN MARVEL

For a long time, despite their almost untouchable record at the box office, Marvel Studios had one major black mark against them: Their lack of females and other minority characters. Sure they had Black Widow kicking butt right there next to Tony Stark and Falcon swooping in to save Captain America’s keister, but these people (yes, I said “these people” in an unoffensive way) weren’t exactly headlining a movie. No, that was still an exclusive club that you needed pale skin and some Y-chromosomes to get into.

But with the announcement of just the inclusion of Black Panther and Captain Marvel but also them getting their own respective solo movies, Marvel are finally taking steps to rectify this matter. In the case of Black Panther, we already know that Chadwick Boseman will be playing the costumed Prince of Wakanda and that he’ll be making his debut in Captain America: Civil War. With Captain Marvel though, we know next to nothing other than this will definitely be the Carol Danvers incarnation of the character from the comics.

But we may just have heard our first bit of very intriguing news about the movie: According to some very, very unsubstantiated reports published in OK! Magazine (via Comic Book Movie), Marvel were apparently so impressed with Angelina Jolie’s sophomore directing effort Unbroken, that they’re now courting the actress-turned-helmer to direct their upcoming Captain Marvel. Getting a female director for their first female-led solo film makes sense – the report lists it as a “priority” for the studio – and Jolie’s name certainly brings a lot of heft to the table. She may still be a bit green as a director, but she did stage some thrilling CG-heavy action scenes in Unbroken, so she may just have a good eye for these things.

Besides for Unbroken (which earned 3 Oscar nominations for cinematography, sound editing sound mixing), Jolie had recently been in the news for some very wrong reasons. During the now infamous Sony hack, a leaked email revealed the studios execs referring to Jolie as a “minimally talented spoilt brat” which led to one of the more hilariously awkward moments of last year. With this bad air around her, Jolie was supposedly very surprised at Marvel’s interest in her, according to OK! Magazine’s sources

What’s more, Jolie has reportedly been offered a $20 million payday for the gig. That’s a really, REALLY  big cheque. To put that into perspective, Chris Nolan made about the same amount for Interstellar, but that’s only because his deal had 20% of the film’s gross built into it. Top A-list filmmakers like Ridley Scott and Paul Greengrass generally only earn in the region of $7 million to $10 million a movie. When stacked up against those kinds of numbers – and taking into account the fact that Marvel are famous for being skinflints when it comes to production budgets – a director with only two helming notches on her belt who has never done anything even close to the size or genre of Captain Marvel being offered $20 million seems almost impossible, and definitely pushes this already shaky rumour further into dubious territory.

Personally though, whether or not this story turns out to be complete excrement, I would actually be intrigued to see what Jolie could do with a film like this. Based on the small bit of her action directing chops we’ve seen thus far, there’s some potential there. And she definitely knows her way around an action/adventure movie having spent so much of her career starring in them. Also, with Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel not exactly being a household name, Jolie’s name would certainly help to sell the project to a doubtful audience, much in the way Edgar Wright’s name got people to buy into the admittedly silly sounding Ant-Man before he left that project so famously.

So what do you guys think, would you like to see Jolie tackling Captain Marvel or would you like somebody else? If I had to go for another pick, I would love to see what Lexi Alexander (Punisher: War Zone), Jennifer Lee (Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen) or hell, even Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker) could do in Marvel’s universe.

  1. I have no preferences when it comes to directors. As far as I’m concerned seeing is believing, because every director will have a stinker to their name at some point & a current lack of experience doesn’t mean inability to do the job when given the opportunity. It’s cool female directors are being considered though.

Why? I get they would like a female director to helm this, but there are so many good choices out there.

Pajiba summed it up brilliantly. Irrespective of her limited filmography, or ability behind the camera, technically Angelina Jolie is the most popular female director in Hollywood right now.

I’m definitely filing this away for my next rant about how comic book movies are destroying society.

I heard that every time someone watches a comic book movie a teenage girl gets pregnant. 😉
