Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: Who is going to play Spider-Man?

Damn, how about that Spider-Man news from yesterday? Have we all recovered yet? Because, I don’t know about you, but I think it’s a pretty freaking huge deal! Having Spider-man officially form part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is massive, and speaks volumes about where the MCU is heading and what we can (hopefully) expect from upcoming storylines.

Slightly less awesome is the leading theory that they won’t be keeping Andrew Garfield on as our favourite web-slinger. As Kervyn discussed earlier, choice phrasing from yesterday’s press release included “the new Spider-Man” – implying of course that, well, we’re getting a new Spider-Man. Combined with the fact that several sources (Variety, The Wrap and THR) are stating that Garfield is out, and that no mention was made of him in the press release means that we’re left to draw our own conclusions until it’s confirmed by Sony themselves.

So, speculation time! For the new-new Spider-Man, I’m going to lobby for Anton Yelchin. He might have his plate full playing Chekov in the Star Trek franchise, but he’s definitely got the right kind of looks, nerdy charisma and humour for the role. Besides, he was originally on the short-list for the role in the reboot anyway, so that gives him a head start. And if we’re looking at the previous short-list, we also have contenders like Aaron Johnson (Kickass) and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), but I don’t think either would be a perfect fit. Sony also might be looking for a replacement in Logan Lerman (Fury, Percy Jackson) and Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner, Teen Wolf).

So who would you like to see under the Spider-Man mask? Do any of the above grab you, or would you prefer to see someone completely different?

Actually, Aaron Johnson would make an interesting choice. But my money (and hopes) are on Logan Lerman securing the role. I thought he was really good in the Percy Jackson movies. But watching him in Fury sealed it for me – he is awesome in that movie (backed up by a seriously great cast)! I think he’s a great actor and would make a seriously good Spidey.

I’m really hoping for Dylan O’Brien. Actually, I’m hoping for Garfield, and that he is pulled back in. Reading comics for most of my life, and with my favourite being Spider-Man (I’ve read over 1500 Spider-Man comics alone), it brought so much joy seeing Garfield as Peter Parker. He nailed the personality and movement of Peter Parker I always pictured when reading the comics. I can’t imagine anyone doing a better job. But if I can’t have Garfield back, I guess Dylan O’Brien is my next option.

Actually, I’m just thinking, they must use Miles. If I can’t have Garfield to play Peter Parker, use Miles instead of Peter and go forward with that….

Dylan O’Brien is very solid choice.

Really great selection of guys there, Anton Yelchin is such an odd suggestion, until you look at him and realise that holy crap, he does actually really fit the original looks of Peter Parker very well. We now seem to think of a Toby McGuire looking bloke as a typical Peter, shorter, darker hair, but I remember the older animated Peter being quite tall and with a bit lighter hair etc. Logan Lerman could be good to (I don’t know this Dylan bloke). Aaron Johnson is already in the Marvel Movies as Quicksilver though? Doubt they would cast him twice in one universe (Fantastic Four was separate for Chris Evans for eg)

Whoever it is, I hope we move on from Peter Parker to Miles Morales. Uncle Ben has died enough!

I think the current guy (Andrew Garfield?) did a good job of nailing Spidey and Parker. They should keep him – I see no reason to drop him. Plus I have no idea who the others are except Kick Ass
