Monday Box Office Report – Fifty shades of green

Valentines Day. Romance. Ball gags. Yep, it looks like 50 Shades Of Grey cleaned up real good over the weekend, with audiences flocking to cinemas and then later hardware stores for some uh, emergency rope. Yes, the soft kind, behind the rougher rope. That’ll fool them.

Opening up to over $81.6 million at the North American box office, Fifty Shades made even more bank worldwide, earning over $158 million. That’s a grand total of  over $239 million over one weekend, which ain’t exactly bad for the modest $40 million budget movie.

For everyone else, the more appealing and possibly superior Kingsman: The Secret Service didn’t do too badly. Taking in over $35.6 million, Kingsman generated some strong buzz, helping to knock the SpongeBob movie down a few pegs. Here’s a look at the rest of the weekend estimates from the North American box office:

• 50 Shades Of Grey – $81.6 Million
• Kingsman: The Secret Service – $35.6 Million
• The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water – $30.5 Million
• American Sniper – $16.4 Million
• Jupiter Ascending – $9.4 Million
• Seventh Son – $4.153 Million
• Paddington – $4.15Million
• The Imitation Game – $3.5 Million
• The Wedding Ringer – $3.4 Million
• Project Almanac – $2.7 Million

Top ten departures this week include Black or White and The Boy Next Door. Black Or White finished a US run with $17.3 million in the bank off of a $9 million budget, while The Boy Next Door made over $36 million off of a $4 million budget. And those aren’t bad numbers at all.
