Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Do you own an iPhone? Do you have money? If you answered yes to either/both of those questions, then you have to get this amazing glowing Back To The Future Delorean iPhone case! I don’t own an iPhone and I don’t have money and I still want it!

  • Kingsmen: The Secret Service has many memorable moments – as we’ve discussed – but none quite like “the Church scene”, a completely demented brawl that [SPOILER ALERT] sees Colin Firth fight and violently decimate an entire church of hate-filled bigots in the most extreme way possible after being mind-controlled. The scene’s action choreography and cinematography is some of the best I’ve ever seen, but what sells it, is that it really is the usually posh Firth and not a stunt double pulling off all this crazy action. And according to writer/director Matthew Vaughn, Firth’s ability to pull this off decided his entire fate on whether he was cast in the role or not.

“I was like… this is a physical role and you’re going to have to train for the next six months. And if you’re not willing to do it, I’m not willing to give you the role. To be blunt, after three months, I’m going to test you. If I think you’re going to pull it off, then you’ve got the role. But if I think you don’t, you’re going to thank me for not casting you, because the worst thing [that] can happen is you look like an idiot doing this stuff in a church. Both of our credibility is gone at that point. So there’s no point in you blindly doing this movie thinking we’re going to pull off the action [and that church fight sequence], because we won’t. And to his credit, he said, ‘I get it. I’m going to train.’ And he trained like you wouldn’t believe. And he pulled it off.”

  • The guys at ComicBook.com have realized that with Spider-Man moving to the MCU now, and being recast as a younger Peter Parker back in high school, all that “untold story” stuff about Peter’s parents dying over some big secret is never going to get resolved now. The whole “untold story” angle was admittedly a mess that was shoehorned in with no other purpose than for The Amazing Spider-Man to distance itself from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, and had they stuck with their original plans to have it all resolved in one movie, instead of using it to not just pad out a trilogy but also launch a shared universe, we probably wouldn’t be here right now. But we are, which is why ComicBook.com is now asking for that original director’s cut to happen so that we can at least get some closure.
  • Robots. We love ’em (despite the fact that they’re destined to rise up and kill us all). There have been a plethora of memorable robots in movies – the most recent examples being the awesomely blocky T.A.R.S. and C.A.S.E. in Interstellar – and this fantastic supercut takes a look at most of them. What’s your favourite robot?

  • Netflix, Hulu and Amazon may be the most popular media streaming services out there, but they are definitely not the only ones. Not only are there several others but some – like the incredible Internet Archive Movies, which boasts a gigantic collection of classics – are completely free to view. Finding all these streaming alternatives could take a while – also we are lazy – but luckily Lifehacker has gone and compiled a list of them, including all the best places to watch everything from Saturday morning cartoons to reruns of Golden Girls!
  • Badass action flick  John Wick features a whole lot of people being murdalized by Keanu Reeves in some of best choreographed kills around. And now you can watch – and count – all of them with this supercut.

  • Are you not a fan of the more volatile looking crossguard lightsaber glimpsed in the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Then blame Apple. Or specifically, blame Jonathan Ive, the man responsible for deigning the look of Apple’s iPod, iPhone and iPad. In a recent interview, Ive revealed that while he wasn’t the actual designer of the new lightsaber, and had nothing to do with the actual crossguard element, he did have discussions with his friend, director JJ Abrams, about the film and made some “very specific” suggestions that were apparently taken to heart.

“I thought it would be interesting it if were less precise and just a little bit more spitty,” he recalled, adding that he suggested that the redesign could be “more analog and more primitive and I think in that way, somehow more ominous.”

I’m going to guess that this new lightsaber will boast older technology and features that other lightsabers have had for years, but it will be sold to public as something completely revolutionary! Also, you won’t be able to remove this lightsaber’s battery pack.

  • I hope you’ve been practicing your crane kick technique, because  t’s time to get your wax on – and back off again! – as the latest installment in JoBlo’s Movie Cliffs Notes is taking on that beloved 1980’s classic The Karate Kid!
