Mark Ruffalo talks potential HULK standalone movies

After two movies and various other actors, I think we may have a Hulk that the public adores. Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner was a great departure from previous attempts to bring the Jade Goliath to life, as he breathed new life into the character with a nuanced performance. Strangely though, Ruffalo’s Hulk has yet to receive his own standalone movie. But there might be a future phase opening for the Hulk to return to the big screen.

Speaking toEmpire, Ruffalo said he was unsure of when exactly we’d see another standalone Hulk film, although he was developing some chemistry with “the other guy” in Avengers: Age Of Ultron:

“Who knows where these things will go,” says Rufallo, “but as Bruce is able to impress his will on the Hulk – going into The Hulk and being inside the Hulk when he’s raging –  The Hulk’s will is also growing and able to impress upon Bruce… It’ll be interesting to see if that ends up being what would be the next Hulk movie.”

But as Ruffalo puts it, the real challenge is making a standalone movie for a character who isn’t exactly easy to properly translate on the big screen:

“[A new feaure-length Hulk movie is] a tough nut to crack,” Ruffalo confesses. “Traditionally you’re watching a guy who doesn’t want to do the very thing that you want him to do. It’s hard to take for two hours. I don’t know how many times you can use that same framing for it, but now he’s maturing and there’s a cool dynamic growing between Banner and The Hulk.”

One Hulk storyline that could easily set up a standalone movie would be Planet Hulk, which saw the Hulk stranded in space thanks to the Avengers. Eventually returning from his exile, the Hulk would then wage war in World War Hulk, exacting revenge on his former comrades. There are a ton more storylines to draw from, but nonetheless, the Hulk is a tricky character to get right. And maybe smaller doses of a green rage steroid monster, is the right way to go.

  1. I would love another Hulk movie… But Hulk himself is right – if they gonna do it, they need to have the right story… Don’t make it just for the sake of it.

I’m yet to read that story, but from the synopsis Darryn gives above, it sounds like an awesome storyline! And one that could easily fit into the current Marvel Movie Universe. I’d be super keen to check it out!
