SA’s Weekend Top 10 (20 to 22 Feb)

Is this the week? Has Tak3n finally left the building? Nope, not yet. But at least the box office of 2015 is starting to look interesting.

Leading the pack is last week’s record breaking debut turned punching bag and controversy maker. Fifty Shades Of Grey has now been attacked from all quarters – some say it is actually demeaning and even a bit dangerous: not because of the whips and chains, but apparently Christian Grey might be a bit of a sociopath. Other people just can’t believe it made money, which meant they forgot about Twilight and the Da Vinci Code. All you need is a rabid fanbase twitching from withdrawal and they will keep the bondage tale at the top of the rankings, regardless of the titular billionaire’s questionable mental state.

The second film has no question though about where it’s at: just plain mental. I’m guessing as I haven’t seen it. But the last Spongebob Squarepants movie had David Hasselhoff’s chest as a prop, so who knows what goes on in Spongebob Squarepants: Out Of Water, which holds onto its second spot for a second week.

Kingsman: The Secret Service has been less lucky, dropping to fourth. But this is not a verdict on its quality, because stepping into third place is the long-awaited, stupidly successful and incredibly divisive American Sniper. As a fan of the book I am a bit dubious about seeing it, considering that quite a bit of detail was apparently changed. But the movie has been taking names since it appeared on the big screen and its strong debut is no surprise.

The Wachowski siblings’ latest movie, Jupiter Ascending, has managed a bit of a comeback, climbing one spot from sixth to fifth. The movie appears to have found its fans, but its performance is still sub-par for the amount of money it cost to make. Still, they say it’s very pretty and that’s the best reason these days to go and see something at a cinema.

The Afrikaans romcom musical (aren’t they all) Mooirivier drops one spot to sixth, but that it is still in the top 10 says quite a bit. It is officially the strongest performing local movie of the year so far. Seventh spot goes to the biggest drop of the week, The Wedding Ringer, sliding down from fourth. The musical Annie holds steady at eighth for a second week.

At number nine, it’s Tak3n! Really, I shouldn’t cheer this movie so much – it’s not that great and you can barely find a nice review of it anywhere. But Tak3n does not care and has kept in the top 10 for, I dunno, a lot of weeks? Six, to be exact – the longest run of the year so far. Finally, at tenth is Addicted, some kind of erotic thriller there to mop up the Fifty Shades leftovers.

The top earning film on the top 10 is Fifty Shades of Grey at R23.5 million. To put that in perspective, the previous record holder, Tak3n, made R17.5 million in five weeks, so Fiddy Shades is indeed an earnings juggernaut.
