Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • I’m a very open-minded kind of guy, but I’m sorry, there’s just no way in hell you can convince me that Fifty Shades of Grey is a romantic movie. A twisted thriller where a sadistic creep stalks a girl and then forces her into some freaky situations against her will? That I can totally buy. Especially after seeing this recut trailer, which splices together footage of Jamie Dornan’s serial killer character in The Fall.

  • With Amy Pascal having recently resigned as head of Sony Pictures after the recent hacking scandal, her position has been standing empty. Until now, as ex-Fox chairman Tom Rothman has now been appointed in her place. Slight problem: Rothman has a very shaky record with superhero movies, and with Spider-Man now finally been confirmed to be swinging into the Marvel Cinematic as part of  a joint Sony and Marvel effort, some fans may be getting a bit antsy about his involvement. But according to a new report from Latino Review, Spider-fans don’t have anything to worry about, as Rothman and producers of the old Spider-Man franchise are apparently producers in name only.

“We have information from a source suggesting there is no financial involvement whatsoever and no direct creative control over Spidey coming from the old guard. Amy Pascal still has a say in the Mom-and-Pop arrangement she has with [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige], but Disney didn’t want to unite Pearlmutter, Arad and Feige in earnest. This is the solution. What does that mean? It means Marvel might have a bit more control than we thought. It means the new Spider-Man has been insulated from BOTH Avi Arad and new Sony head, superhero property curse, Tom Rothman.”

  • Think of the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Last Action Hero, and you probably think of those hilarious Arnie one-liners, Charles Dance’s crazy prosthetic eyeballs and all the cartoonish slapstick humour. In other words, a zany fun movie with a cool action star, right? Wrong. Oh so very depressingly, disturbingly, nightmarishly wrong.

  • If you make use of Netflix, then you know that the video streaming service is evil. As soon as an episode ends, you have what feels like only 3 seconds to stop the stream or it starts autoloading the next episode. Which of course you have to watch, because I mean it’s already playing and everything. Netflix obviously does this intentionally so as to get people to binge-watch their shows, but as I luckily discovered yesterday you can actually turn off the autoplay option if you know just where to look.
  • American Horror Story has seen all kinds of freaks grace it in the show’s previous four seasons, but for the show’s upcoming fifth season it’s getting the mother of all monsters: Lady Gaga. Fresh from a critically acclaimed musical performance at the Oscars, the “Poker Face” singer revealed that she has landed a recurring role in the next season of the show, titled American Horror Story: Hotel, and even put up this weird little teaser to make the announcement.

  • Bonus poster of the day! Robert Downey Jr posted this new Iron Man character poster for Avengers: Age of Ultron on his official Facebook page, and then also included this teasing message:  “And don’t tell ‘em I told you, but there’s a big announcement coming in 8 days… Shhhhhhh… #getexcited”. Well there go my plans to actually get any sleep for the next 8 days!

  • I have zero idea what Fox Searchlight’s intentions are with this absolutely pitch-perfect 90’s style action figure commercial for the Oscar-winning Birdman, but I can’t deny just how damn cool it is.

  • Just how many times have you already watched that first trailer Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Well, you’re probably going to have to watch it a whole lot more, as we could be in for a wait until the next one is released, according to super-secretive director JJ Abrams.

“First of all, I’m always grateful that people would be asking. But the truth is like we haven’t shown anything. We don’t want to be coy but we have almost a year until the movie comes out, so we have to be smart about what we say and when. We’re always having conversations about it.

There’s sort of an abundance of riches with the stuff we could put out so we’re just trying to make sure it’s as good as it could be before we put anything out. The disaster would be to race something out for the sake of making an impact and it being not as good as people deserve.

I would say thank you for being interested. Thank you for your patience and honestly, I can’t wait for you to see the film.”
