Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • We unfortunately kicked off this past weekend with the sad news of the passing of the great Leonard Nimoy. The veteran actor was much beloved by just about everybody, so tributes have been pouring in non-stop from friends and fans, SyFy held a special 5-hour long programming marathon in his honour, online role-playing game Star Trek Online will see a digital memorial being built to the man known to millions as Mr Spock, and Variety even has a great article up on 14 facts about his career that you may not know. The best tribute for me though is happening in Canada, where their five dollar bill features an image of the 7th Canadian Prime Minster Sir Wilfred Laurier, who happens to have a passing resemblance to Nimoy. This led to the Canadian Design Resource issuing a call to arms asking people to use a pen to “Spock” their banknotes in memory of Nimoy, and the results are fantastic.

  • Speaking of great men, here are 3 facts about Die Hard that you may not know.

  • After the most recent “cop show” revelations, I have zero faith that Fox’s upcoming adaptation of celebrated DC comic Lucifer will anything close to justice to what is my favourite comic book story of all time. And now my faith has just gone into negative numbers as its been revealed that Rush actor Tom Ellis has been cast in the lead role as the fallen angel and ex-ruler of Hell. When Neil Gaiman created the character of Lucifer in “Sandman”, he based him on David Bowie: blonde hair, pale skin, a bit effeminate build, piercing light coloured eyes. Ellis has absolutely none of those things. Sigh.
  • Poster of the day: Rambo: First Blood

  • Just in case you were wondering: Han Solo is an idiot. Here’s proof:

  • The Union Station shootout in Brian De Palma’s Untouchables is one of the most memorable scenes in cinema history, and thanks to this great 11-minute video we can dissect it shot for shot to find just what makes it so good.

  • I know that many of you, after having seen Joseph Kahn’s dark and gritty R-rated Power/Rangers reboot, held back on your opinions until you heard what Jason David Frank has to say. Oh you, don’t even know who that is? I guess it’s just Darryn then who still worships at the feet of Tommy Oliver, aka the original Green Ranger in the 1990’s TV show. Who, as its been revealed by the actor, was actually contacted by Kahn to star in the short film, but then turned it down because he didn’t like what he saw.

“I know there’s a lot of fans out there that love it and all that stuff, but I’m just a PG-13 guy. The cuss words, the drugs, all this other stuff — it doesn’t fly with me. […] The problem is, they’re [the Power Rangers] still connected with adults and kids. The ‘Super Megaforce’ and ‘Power Ranges Dino Charge’ are still on Nickelodeon, and so you can’t take a brand like this and reboot it so dark and gritty. […] This still is a kids’ brand.”

  • The fact that it’s taken the nitpicking crew at CinemaSins this long to tackle Smith family dud After Earth is quite surprising. The number of “faults’ they find definitely isn’t.
