Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Last night saw the return of Marvel’s Agent of SHIELD, but it was a bittersweet return as that signified the end of Agent Carter which was simply incredible over its 8-episode run. Hayley Atwell turned in a star making performance in show that was not only cool and fresh but steeped in Marvel lore. Which lore, you ask? Well check out this easter egg video to find out.

  • Finally! We can now at last stop referring to Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ untitled Cold War spy thriller as Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ Untitled Cold War Spy Thriller as it’s been revealed that the film will be titled Bridge of Spiesreferring to a famous bridge in Germany which earned its nicknamed after becoming a favourite spot for captured spy exchanges between the US and Soviet Russia. What’s more, besides for just getting a title, the movie is also getting some John Williams, as the legendary composer will be providing the movie’s score, his 27th collaboration with Spielberg.
  • Poster of the day: Star Trek II: The Search for Spock

  • Star Wars Rebels’ unexpectedly good first season has just wrapped with an awesome finale that introduced a pair of old faces. Old faces that are not vampires, let’s just point that out, before you get confused by the fact that Buffy The Vampire Slayer herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, will be joining the animated show’s cast in its next season. At this point, just who Gellar will be voicing is being kept tightly under wraps.

“I try not to read it because I don’t know how it would help me do the job that I have to do, which is to make the very best version of this movie possible. I think it was good to know a bit of what fans are hoping for but then again, I’m a fan as well so I know what I’m hoping for and I try to sort of take that as my lead and not get my head too occupied with what’s on the Internet.”

  • As many of you may know, Whiplash is incredible. What some of you may not know, is that when developing the movie, first time feature film writer/director Damien Chazelle had no idea how he would pitch a musical drama that plays out more like a violent thriller to studios. So he made a short film. He shot a section of his screenplay, getting JK Simmons to play the role that would eventually get him an Oscar. This was before Miles Teller came on board, so Johnny Simmons stood in, but the result is no less electric, as you can see.

  • Taking cue from the film’s iconic anthem, we definitely did not forget about The Breakfast Club as John Hughes’ timeless classic tale about teenage identity will be getting a new digitally restored re-release in 430 select US cinemas for just two nights later in the month. This newly enhanced version (don’t worry, I’m pretty sure they didn’t add in any CGI Jabba the Hutts or Hayden Christensen Force ghosts) will be making its debut at SXSW Film Festival on March 16, preceded by a Q&A with cast members Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy.
  • We’ve already seen one movie last year about Edward Snowden, but it was rather crap so nobody saw it (it takes a lot to make Benedict Cumberbatch unwatchable). Now Oliver Stone is going to  try his hand at this with the upcoming Snowden, and today we get our first glimpse of Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Snowden before he became an infamous whistleblower and was just an ordinary army grunt.
  • Movie trailers, we both love ’em (OOH DID YOU SEE ALL THE TANTALIZING TEASES!) and hate ’em (STOP GIVING AWAY THE FULL PLOT, YOU IDIOTS!). Since the birth of trailers, when they still played after the movie giving rise to their name, to today’s 2-minute long mini-movies, these previews have changed a lot. And because I am lazy and don’t feel like typing it all out, here’s a really cool video explaining that history.

  • The Rush Hour TV series, which I had very nearly forgotten was still in development, has found its Jackie Chan. And, well, he’s no Jackie Chan. Jon Foo, most famous for playing Jin Kazama in the live-action Tekken movie (which is horrible) and no relation to Mr. T’s sucker foo’, has landed the role of Hong Kong Chief Inspector Lee, which was of course played by Chan in the original movie trilogy. There’s no word yet on who will be playing Chris Tucker’s role of Detective Carter.
  • If I’m being completely honest, The Hunger Games: The Mockingjay – Part 1, while it had some great moments, was a bit of a disappointment as it is clearly only the first half of a story. If the folks at Screenjunkies are being completely honest, then The Hunger Games: The Mockingjay – Part 1 is prime fodder for a whole lot of snarky jokes.

  1. Didn’t Benedict play Julian Assange, not Edward Snowden?
