For as long as Sherlock Holmes has been sleuthing, the great detective has always been seen in his intellectual prime. After all, how appealing would a Sherlock Holmes film be that revolved around an aged master investigator tackling the case of the missing socks? Thing is, that’s half of a good hook, something that will be seen when Sir Ian McKellen portrays an aged genius in the upcoming Mr Holmes. Here’s the first trailer for that film.

MR. HOLMES is a new twist on the world’s most famous detective.1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare.  Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger.  Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it’s too late.

It’s an odd mix of triumph with a potential protege in this trailer, mixed with the harsh reality of even the sharpest mind finding itself dulled after years of precision work that saw it put to use in solving an unsolveable crime. Still, it’s a hell of a lot more pleasant than when Mitchell and Webb tackled the idea of Sherlock Holmes living his final days in a retirement village:

Mr Holmes will be searching for clues later this year. Bill Condon directs.
