What would you get if you were to put Ghandi’s mind in Green Lantern’s body? Well, we’re about to find out in Self/Less, a new sci-fi thriller that sees Ben Kingsley as a dying rich guy who has his consciousness transferred into the vegetative body of a young Ryan Reynolds. Sounds like a sweet deal, until some shady goings-on rear their heads, as they invariably do in these things.

Self/Less is the latest flick from Tarsem Singh, the highly imaginative director behind such visually spectacular films as The Cell, The Fall and Immortals. He appears to have toned down his usual music video aesthetic this time around though, which I have to admit is kind of disappointing. Irrespective of how the rest of a Tarsem Singh movie turned out, you could always be assured that it would look like you’re on the best psychotropic trip of your life. Now we just have Ryan Reynolds being mopey in a tracksuit and Ben Kingsley doing the worst impression of a squid caught in a net to look forward to. Well that and the whole sci-fi conspiracy thing run by ne’er-do-well Matthew Goode, which does look decent enough overall but could be a bit more eyecatching.

In this provocative psychological science fiction thriller, an extremely wealthy man (Academy Award® Winner Ben Kingsley) dying from cancer undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of a healthy young man (Ryan Reynolds). But all is not as it seems when he starts to uncover the mystery of the body’s origin and the organization that will kill to protect its cause.

Self/Less also stars Victor Garber, Natalie Martinez, Derek Luke and Michelle Dockery. It is scheduled for release on July 31, 2015.

Not saying it doesn’t look good overall. Just bummed that the thing that always made Singh stand out in the crowd isn’t there now.
