We love superheroes, we love Sharlto Copley and we love free stuff! So when all three those things combined yesterday, we sure as hell got excited! What am I blabbering on about? Well, totally unexpectedly yesterday, Sony went and made the entire first episode of their upcoming comic book adaptation series Powers available for free for everybody to enjoy. And boy did I enjoy it!

For those not in the know, Powers is set to be airing exclusively on Sony’s Playstation Network and is an adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s critically acclaimed comic about an ex-superhero Christian Walker (Copley), who loses his powers and becomes a police detective in the special “Powers” division who investigate crimes involving the very same superheroes he used to hang out with.

The show is a refreshingly mature take – complete with R-rated violence and strong language (so keep this away from the kiddies) – on the whole superhero genre and acts as a great deconstruction of its tropes. It has a few tonal problems, and Copley’s American accent sometimes falters, but it also delves into some real meaty issues. And of course Eddie Izzard is an awesome villain. Check it out below and let us know what you thought!

(And if anybody is having trouble viewing this video thanks to that incessantly annoying “Video Uploader has made the video unavailable in your country” regional blocking, just make sure you have something like Proxtube installed which will bypass all that malarkey).

When a famous superhero turns up dead, it’s up to Detective Christian Walker, a former Power himself, and his new partner, Detective Deena Pilgrim, to track down the one witness to what happened that night – a young girl by the name of Calista.

Well that’s certainly not going to help me overcome my Michelle Forbes crush!

Powers entire first season is airing in earnest right now on PSN.

There are few things in life that upset me more than regional locking videos. It makes no sense, seeing as the actual content is available everywhere on PSN. But just install Proxtube or the like, like I mentioned in the article, and you can bypass it.

Yeah, I know. I installed it and the video plays fine. It’s just the general idea behind it.

Have you confirmed that is available everywhere for PS+ subscribers. I can not find it in the Sony Store and most internet sources seems to state that it is only available in the US.

Gotta say, having watched the first 15 odd minutes, the writing is pretty bad. Or maybe it’s the editing. Or both. Either way, something feels off.

I honestly actually felt the same initially. The production values, dialogue and direction in that opening bit (particularly the opening scene in the police station) is very iffy. But then as they go along and start peeling back the world and digging into the characters, it really picked up for me.
