Sure to be one of the biggest animated movies of the year, if not the biggest, is Pixar’s long-awaited Inside Out. There has been a previous trailer for this film – check it out lower down on the page – but this new trailer gives a much better idea of what we can expect from the movie.

The premise is simple enough: we all have little people in our heads who control us, each representing some emotional state and bashing buttons on a console to make us do things. In this case the movie focuses on the inside of 11-year-old Riley’s head, who has moved to a new town, new school and also has to battle the emergence of adolescence. All this on the rip-roaring track More Than A Feeling from those shameless pushers of bubblegum rock Boston. No wedding is complete without it and, now, nor is Pixar…

Well, that was exciting… in a Dreamworks kinda way. Those who’ve been on the site for a while will know me to be a difficult, contrarian movie snob who seems to hate everything that is new and shiny. So if you are not in the mood for that, just skip ahead. I posted the first trailer plus some introduction to the actors behind the voices down below.

But if you are still here, I think CG animation is in a funk and generally we’ve just been appreciating rubbish. Big Hero 6 was contrived, predictable and easily forgettable. How To Train Your Dragon 2 was okay… for a sequel, but inferior to the first film. The Lego Movie was the same joke repeated for 90 minutes, plus a nice message that conformity and instant gratification is a-okay. Frozen was little more than a land grab at when Disney actually made interesting musical animations. Meanwhile much finer cinematic experiences like The Boxtrolls were left to eat box office dirt. Perhaps this is my ‘get off my lawn’ moment, but the golden age of animation has passed us and Inside Out really is not convincing me otherwise. This is no Up or Finding Nemo.

Or maybe making Lewis Black the voice of Anger is just a little bit freaking obvious, a word I never thought I’d put in the same sentence as Pixar. Hey, I like Black, but while we’re at it, why not make a character called Anxiety and ask Woody Allen if he’s available?

Okay, here’s some more fodder for Inside Out. Be sure to start squirming about how this ought to be movie of the year or something. I’m gonna go watch The Incredibles again and moan to no one in particular about how it used to be.
