The FRIDAY THE 13TH TV series will be very 'meta'

I don’t know about you guys, but I like the Friday The 13th reboot that popped up back in 2009. With a meaner, stronger Jason who didn’t lumber around like a drunk uncle, the film had a certain sense of menace in the air. It was also filled to the brim with references to the older movies, which shows just how much love and care went into reviving the Camp Crystal Lake killer.

Jason

It wasn’t enough though, and it instead killed Jason more effectively than any of his other movie deaths. Still, you can’t keep a good Voorhees down, and it looks like Jason will be back for more, only this time he’ll be on a smaller screen. Currently being written by Bill “Terminator” Basso and Jordu “Avatar” Schell, the series will re-imagine “Jason in multiple time periods,” according to Fridaythe13thfranchise.com:

“Sean Cunningham confirmed interest from the CW in regards to pickup for the tv show. According to him, the basic premise focuses on the REAL city of Crystal Lake, and the effect that the serialized films had on its real life counterpart. This allows them to reimagine Jason in a more grounded reality, as the films would be based off the real life killings that took place at the Camp. (ie, both the Hockey Masked Jason and a more serious backwoods inspired killer will be making appearances throughout) “

That’s kind of neat, and a fresh start for Voorhees that actually feels inspired. Combining that with actual murder cases, might be…killer.

  1. Intriguing premise… But I’ll hold off judgement till episode 1 is actually out there and watchable, because they could so easily get this wrong.

Gonna have to disagree. The remake didn’t bother doing any heavy lifting – just fan pandering. That is the same problem with the later movies, which didn’t bother selling the character anymore. I also liked the faster Jason, but the rest of the movie was just crap. Give me Freddy vs Jason instead.

Anyway, this is already a bust to me because it’s CW. Totally the wrong platform for this kind of material. I’m not just talking gore or nudity. The fact that it’s CW means we’ll keep looking at salon hair and teenagers pining over each other because they never actually communicate. I bet the show will have an old but reliable sheriff and a hunky-or-geeky deputy. Ten bucks says the high school quarterback and local frumpy student paper reporter team up to solve the mystery.

Also, every attempt to recast the show without making Jason or his mom a cornerstone just failed. That thing with the hell worm. The original TV series. The fifth movie. All sucked because they tried to push Jason out of the frame.

    Nah, fuck this.
