Brett Ratner thinking of remaking ENTER THE DRAGON

I have a feeling that after reading that headline, it may come as a surprise to many of you that this article contains any other words beside “no” repeated ad nauseum. Trust me, I’m as shocked as you are. The source of this latest shock is AICN who are reporting that while hosting a special screening of Rush Hour in Beverly Hills on Saturday evening, director Brett “I’m a bigger X-Men villain than Magneto” Ratner revealed to the audience in attendance that he’s thinking of remaking Bruce Lee’s 1973 seminal martial arts classic Enter The Dragon.

Ratner wouldn’t get into any specifics about his idea for a remake, but revealed that it had its origin in his love of Lalo Schifrin’s iconic musical score for the flick. He did assure the audience though that “he wasn’t trying to find the next Bruce Lee or anything crazy like that” and that this would be a “reimagining” of the original.

For the three of of you that haven’t seen it yet (we will find you and we will shame you), Enter the Dragon saw the legendary Lee as a martial artist (who likes to wax philosophical about fingers pointing to moons and water in tea cups) who gets invited by a reclusive drug lord to participate in a martial arts tournament held on his remote, heavily guarded private island. British Intelligence, recruits Lee though to also help expose the drug lord’s operation while on the island. Cue Lee making lots of mewling noises as he proceeds to kick severe amounts of ass. Also stomp on one dude’s chest while pulling an O-face. Trust me, it’s way more badass than it sounds.

Now that plot is nothing exceptional, and lets be honest, director Robert Clouse wasn’t exactly working magic behind the camera. The movie only reached it’s acclaimed status through Lee’s incredible fighting skills, charisma and on-screen presence. If that sounds familiar, it’s because Ratner found himself doing the same thing with Rush Hour, where Jackie Chan’s special brand of hyperactive gymnastic monkey kung fu and Chris Tucker’s motormouth carry the movie, while Ratner just makes sure to capture all the action in-frame.

Given a talented enough martial arts leading man like Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim or Scott Adkins, Ratner might actually be able to pull off something like this to non-disastrous results. Of course, I would prefer that nobody remakes Enter the Dragon at all. But if it had to be done… well, actually, if it had to be done, I would wish it was rather somebody like Gareth Evans (The Raid 1 & 2) or maybe the duo of Chad Stahelski and David Leitch (John Wick). Hell, or even tapping the direct-to-DVD pool of action directors like Isaac Florentine or John Hyams, who have been producing some of the most incredible action choreography of the last few years on shoestring budgets. But if none of them were available, then yeah, I guess even a hack like Ratner could possibly pull it off. Maybe. With one helluva star. And a miracle. And maybe Jackie Chan doing another cameo like he did in the original.

This guy has never made a decent movie in his life, who keeps giving him money? Leave Bruce Lee’s films alone, they cannot be matched without him starring in them.
